Chapter 21 : Forever Trapped

Bright, shining lights filled the room. Music poured across the floor, mixing with people clothed in garments of the finest fabric, melting into one another to form one flowing mass. Skirts swirled with each spin, arms circled arms, and feet spiraled across the polished marble.
I saw all this as I stood at the top of the grand staircase that led down into the Great Hall. Across the room, so distant that he appeared an ant, I saw Calix sitting on his thrown, golden robes tied neatly around his muscular frame.
Our eyes met, and he smiled, winking and tipping his chin to me.
“You are expected,” Morgina spoke from behind me. She, too, wore a simple but refined dress for the occasion. As the head of the staff, she was expected to attend the ball as a guest.
“I know,” I huffed, still unprepared for what awaited me.
