The Kingmaker: Legend of the Undefeated Commander

"Saras Gayen! Are you reading those dusty old books again?"  Nina Gayen's shout preceded her entrance as she banged open the door to her son's room. As she expected, she found Saras sitting on his bean bag, holding a paperback copy of World History: The Ancient Civilizations. She snatched the book from his hands and tossed it into the pile of other books covering a range of topics from politics to economics related to Earth. "Look at Ellie's daughter, Stivi. She has already reached Level 3 in the Dreamverse VR within two hours of its launch. Why are you still lounging at home?" "I am not lounging! I am studying History…" Saras protested, looking at the book pile before turning his gaze towards his mother.  She stood with her hands on her hips, glaring at him as if he had committed a grave sin by not entering the game as soon as it was launched. "You are turning 25 this year. If you don't play the Dreamverse VR now and join a good guild, how will you find a wife?" Thus started his journey as he once again navigated the VR scene through the mysterious game Dreamverse VR that was said to hold the keys to Human Evolution.

First Active Skill

Of the remaining two notifications, the first one was about the 1 point increase in my Strength Stat.

The 65 arrows I had shot for Bow Mastery Quest had also been counted in the Strength Training task. Hence, the Strength Stat Point reward.

I was happy to receive the extra point but the next notification made my eyes go wide.

[You have achieved a marvelous feat of shooting 5 arrows in 3 seconds. You are eligible to create your own Archery Skill related to this feat.]

[You have met the requirements to learn the skill, <Rapid Shot>. Would you like to learn the skill?]

In Dreamverse VR, except for skill books and Professional Instructors, there was another way to learn a skill.

It was by replicating the skill's effects without actually knowing the skill. It was an incredibly hard feat to achieve and not many people would actually try this method to learn a desired skill.

Just take the requirement of shooting 5 consecutive arrows in 3 seconds.

An average Archer could only shoot 1 arrow per second. To increase the attack speed, one would need a minimum of 5 points in dexterity. Even so, bringing that time to 0.6 seconds per arrow was a near impossible task!

I only managed to do it because my mind and body were in an extraordinary state. I was fully focused on shooting and no other thoughts invaded my consciousness. This kind of state could only be attained by luck. If one wanted to consciously reach this state, it would require a lifetime of practice like an ascetic!

With such harsh requirements, why would players try to obtain skills this way?

Rather than spending hours practicing, they could just buy the skill book for <Rapid Shot> when it became more accessible.

However, I had lucked out and I could learn the skill now. It was even a skill like Rapid Shot which could switch between single target and multiple targets!

I quickly clicked 'Yes' and agreed to learn the skill.

[Warning! By learning this skill you agree to forfeit the right to create your own skill related to this feat. Do you agree?]

I hesitated a little. Who would not want their own custom skill?

However, creating one was not easy. One needed a clear blueprint and capability to replicate the actions until the system recognized them as a skill. This process could take days or even weeks.

Take Stivi for example. She had perfected her Three Hit Combo over the years in multiple VR Games. Even without the skill, she could still replicate the same patterns easily. Hence, the system recognized it as a skill within a short time and fit it into the Game's parameters.

The same was not the case with me. I was not sure I would be able to replicate my feat anytime soon nor did I have a clear idea of how to create my own skill according to System parameters.

If I tried, it may take me weeks to see results. Some unlucky players had needed months before they saw an outcome.

If I was to be one of the unlucky ones, by the time I perfected the skill, the player levels would be higher and I may have access to much better skills. At that time the custom skills' effects would be mediocre compared to the mainstream standards and thus the skill would have already become obsolete.

On the other hand, the <Rapid Shot> allows a player to shoot 5 arrows within a time span of 3 seconds. Each of the arrows of the Tier 0 Rapid Shot did 80% of base damage at Lv 1.

Also, as the Level of skill increases, the number of arrows shot and the damage dealt would only continue to grow.

In such a situation, it would be unwise of me to actually give up on learning <Rapid Shot>, a skill that could provide a huge immediate boost to my DPS.

Especially now, when I was going to face a strong adversary like the Slave of Darkness soon. Making up my mind, I decisively chose to forfeit the opportunity to create a custom skill and learned <Rapid Shot>

However, before I could check the description, the Strength Training Session came to an end.

Stivi failed to 'correctly' swing the sword 100 times. Had she not spent so much time gawking in my direction, maybe she would've done better.

Anyways, I spent the next half an hour teaching Goku Yoga, as promised. I did not receive any Stat point rewards but Goku's favorability went up by 2 points.

All in all, it was a fruitful Training session and I was already looking forward to tomorrow.

As much as I wanted to go to the wilds and check out my new skill, I had to wait. Right now, both our Stamina Bars were in red. The adrenaline rush from the exercise was also starting to wear off and we were starting to feel the fatigue.

Deciding to replenish our Stamina, Stivi and I agreed to take a break. We quickly made our way towards the VR Complex cafeteria for Breakfast.

Stivi also contacted her Party and asked, no, ordered them to come online within the next half an hour. Then she proceeded to chow down her breakfast while looking as elegant as a swan.

Soon, our plates were clean and it was time to pay for the food. Stivi turned to me and said,"You are paying, Mr. Bow Master!"

I looked at her, nonplussed.

"The hell I am! I introduced you to such a great quest where you can farm Stat points. Show me some gratitude!"

We bickered for a few minutes and in the end I paid for breakfast on the condition that she would pay for lunch. Revitalized by the food and drinks, we logged back into the game.
