Experiment

River, Jade and William followed Sloan's hand and looked where she was pointing.

Two yellow glowing eyes were showing through the branches. The sun was going down and the rain still poured but the eyes showed clear as day. One eye was staring at them, while the other was off looking away. It seemed like a lazy eye as it didn't move along with the other. The rest of the body was invisible in the pouring rain and dark night.

None of the kids dared to move.

Then out of nowhere the thing leaped out from the tree. The kids screamed and ran spreading out from one another. As the eyes leaped through the air. River hobbled with all her might. Jade dove into the ground with William. Sloan turned around and ran toward the parking lot.

The thing landed, barely making a sound. It ran after Sloan, it was so silent and fast as it's feet skid across the wet grass. It wasn't long till it got up to Sloan.

Sloan collapsed near the parking area as it snatched at her arm. The thing drove her arm in the dirt till it was purple.

River yelled at it and screamed, to get it's attention. The eyes turned to her, River ran to the tree trying to direct it off of Sloan's arm.

The thing narrowed its eyes at River, then started to stalk towards her. Jade and William got up and joined screaming. Sloan silently crept away, she tried to bring circulation back in her arm.

River felt some relief when she saw the thing move off of her arm. But now it was after her.

Just as a River was about to make a run for it bright headlights blared, the kids shielded their eyes. The kids could make out a outline of the thing since there was now light. It wasn't a bear. This thing was long and skinny, it seemed to stand 5ft tall. Almost as tall as her! The thing turned its head toward the light but before it could do anything the car rammed into it. Sloan dodged the car just barely as it hit the creature.

The kids stood and looked at the car with the headlights still blaring at them. Sloan cried to them when she glances under the car "it's still breathing!!" she started to run to the others gripping her arm. River was happy to still see Sloan talking.

The car door opened, everyone held their breath. A man came out in a black rain jacket and black pants. He ran up to the kids "I am Officer Alex, but we can't stay here to talk we need to go now!" He called over the storm "we can meet with the others" he started to run to one of the pastures.

River and the others gave quick glances but before anything could be discussed there was screech. A huge claw came from under the car and was scraping the door. Everyone ran as the creature began to lift itself from under the car.

Officer Alex took the kids into one of the pastures behind some trees near the back.

When River and the others arrived all the other kids were there, as in other kids I meant there were only 3 other in the lesson that night. River noticed that another adult was there she called herself Officer Ella.

"Officer Alex!" Ella called, "glad you came!" River settled down under a tree, none of the kids said anything. They all stared up at the officers.

Jade ended up asking "why did you come here? Who called you?" Everyone stared as the Officers looked at one another.

"We were called about a animal, we can handle it! We are with animal control." Officer Ella explained "I know you are all quite flustered but we have handled things like these before."

River leaned against the tree, did Mark really call Animal Control? It seemed so quick when Jade came in the barn, found me and then went to Mark. Surely he couldn't have called them, we couldn't find the phone on him at all, River thought.

"How are you exactly planning on killing that thing?" River said.

"That is not your kids concern, but you still have an hour left here till your parents pick you up, so stay calm." Officer Alex said.

Jade stood up, "now wait a minute! That thing sure is our concern! It has killed our trainer and one horse! We almost had another friends arm broken off and you just waltz right in here and say we should just forget about this?! I am only yelling because I don't believe that you are officers at all, our trainer is dead with no trace of his phone! And he was the only one that was supposed to call you." Jade turned red after saying that, she knew it was wrong to yell at adults especially if they were really officers.

Officer Ella sighed "ok, ok...we are not officers. We are Scientists from a lab not to far. We have been tracking that thing ever since it escaped."

River stuttered "you mean-that thing? Is an-experiment?" She tried not to stutter and act like this didn't bother her but that thing at the barn isn't even a biological animal. It was made out of weird science shit.

Ella nodded slow, she was ashamed and felt sorry for the kids. She never was supposed to give away the truth and her identity but it broke her heart on how these kids were getting hurt by her cause. Ella felt like she couldn't lie to them, not after all they have been through.

"So what is that thing really?" Jade asked her hands shaking and her body trembling.

"It's a monster." Alex said coldly.
