Lanre's Mother's Words

“If you must stand, then you must first serve. If you must be great, then you must have ate from the hands of the great”. Those were Lanre’s mother’s words to her daughter Lanre four weeks ago when she had returned home to Ibadan.

At first when her mother told her to go work under her madam, she felt her mother didn’t know what she was saying. But not wanting to disrespect the old lady, she decided to do as she was told. After all it was only for a month. And it her mother had pushed through with her staying a month longer, that’s where she would have opted. Now she feels grateful to her mother. When would she had attained this if not that she was working for her madam. Something in her told her it was going to come off well for her.

They took selfies together and the actress told her she was going to upload it in her Instagram page after the marriage rites has been done. The white wedding was going to be in two days. Which was a Saturday. And that’s the one dignitaries and celebrities will be attending. This was just going to be graced by the actress closest association.

“Do you know you are a very beautiful lady as well? One would believe you are all these ajebutters”. The actress said commending Lanre’s beauty. Then she focused on her phone. Lanre was about leaving when she was told to stay. The actress told her to keep her company till her mother comes fetch her, that’s when they have commenced performing the rites for her marriage which was paying the bride price as well as the bride finding her groom and offering him wine to drink. Then the groom accepts the wine and dance out with the bride. Then they get the blessings from the bride’s parents and the eldest man and woman in the bride’s family.

Lanre sat with the actress as they both just talked on random stuffs. It was as if they had known each other for years. From random talks, the actress ended up telling Lanre of her she got into the movie industry. Hers was just sheer luck. She had gone for an audition and then before she finished the lines she was asked to play out, they already like her. And gave her the part as the second lead female. Then, more contracts kept coming. Lanre had as well told her a bit about herself since the actress asked.

“Oh my god!” The actress exclaimed. Lanre looked at her wondering what was wrong with her. “Yesterday was the Governor’s son’s birthday!” The actress said. “It was done in Abuja. It seems he did not even stay till the end. I heard he is a rebel!” The actress said.

Lanre didn’t say anything. The governor’s son’s birthday was not her business. But the actress went on to talk about it. Then she called Lanre to come see.

“You are a journalist by profession, you should be curious about these things”. The actress said. She was showing Lanre what seemed to be the highlight of the day. It was the kiss scene of the governor’s son with an unnamed lady.
