He went behind the counter and turned to the woman at the front of the line. “What’ll it be?” He smiled as he reminded himself this wasn’t the bar, where he and customers had to shout short sentences at each other over the pumping music.

“Just coffee, please.” The woman returned his smile as he poured a cup and handed it to her.

“That’ll be…do you know how much it’ll be?”

She laughed and handed him a few coins before disappearing among the people.

“Oh, Jason, you don’t have to.” Jen’s cheeks were rosy, and while he was absolutely certain her smile was real, she looked exhausted.

“I don’t mind.” And he didn’t. Jason liked to work. Strange as it might seem, he liked pouring drinks for people, chatting a little, and making sure they had a good time.

“You’re an angel, but you shouldn’t work with your hand.”

He shouldn’t; he’d already called his boss to take time off the following week. “I can pour coffee.”

“Yeah, okay. I’ll make the food. You serve the drinks.”
