Chapter 13

Howard pulled himself onto his feet and yanked Jason up toward him. It was an adrenaline move, the kind that helped elderly people fight wolves to save their grandchildren, or let willowy teenagers lift cars off of people. He wasn’t sure if those things happened, but he had heard enough about them in tabloids and late-night news shows that he believed in them, and this seemed to make it easy for him to pull Jason up and practically drag him to shore. Somewhere during this time, Jason turned around and saw the serpentine beastie that had made Howard scream. Howard grabbed his hand and they both began to run away from it and toward the car. Finally, at the car, they stopped and turned to each other.

“My hero,” Jason said, hugging him.

Howard pulled back, looked at him, and then began to laugh like Jason hadn’t heard him laugh in a very long time. It only took a second for Jason to join in. When they had calmed down a bit, they both began to stare in the direction of the kayaks.
