The Devil's Embrace

Madeline Rose had only ever worked in her father's local blacksmith shop and occasionally helped her mother at the farm. Her skin had become tanned from the hot sun, but despite all of this, she did not complain. Even though she didn't come from a wealthy home, she was content. However, her life turned upside down when she stumbled upon a darkness that refused to leave her alone. There was him, a man cloaked in mystery and malice, a presence that sent chills down her spine. His eyes, shrouded in shadows, held a depth of darkness that seemed to swallow the light around him. When their paths crossed, Madeline felt a cold dread wash over her, as if she had invited a malevolent force into her world.

Don't Leave

"I cannot believe him," Madeline scoffed, walking hastily towards the room.

She had quickly forgotten about dinner and had lost her appetite. "Is he now attracted to women fairer than I am?" she clicked her tongue, her eyes traveling to her tan skin.

Despite the little glow of her skin, it still wasn't as fair as the lady at the terrace, nor as fair as Princess Alba. "I hate that I am even thinking these things."

"The king can do whatever he wants," she pushed open the door, walked towards the window, and shifted the curtains, her gaze fixed on the moonlight. "But he is my husband. Why would I not get upset and angry?"

"I must keep calm," she took a few breaths, trying to keep her anger in check. But no matter how many breaths she took, no matter how many times she tried to stay calm, the image of him holding that woman came back, reigniting the anger again.
