The Broken Deal

"Men in our family never age passed thirty" August's father said at the dinner table. The fifteen year old looked up in shock to see his brother enjoying a meal like he hadn't heard a word their father said. "I'm not going to die at thirty. Never," Gregory, his brother, solemnly promised as they poured dust over their father's grave. Despite all plans set in motion, Gregory dies, leaving the family business to August. A part of his will states he's found a cure; a young human girl named Kelly Richardson. Kelly is beyond shocked when the unpopular billionaire, August Cline, shows up the same day her mother dies. He offers her a tempting deal to be his in-house guinea pig. Mysteries surrounding her mother's death and the mountains of debts and loans crashing on her, Kelly accepts. She will now spends her days navigating an eccentric billionaire, his animus nephew and the butler who sees all; while solving the mystery of the estranged Aunt Davi's return Not to mention, what was the deal with their red eyes? Excerpt "It's a beautiful piece," Kelly froze. This gallery was too large for them to run into each other. She wasn't ready. She couldn't face him. "Is it yours?" "What?" She turned on instinct and met with striking grey eyes. His jet black hair went just over his temples, and the rest of it stayed below his ears. His strong brows drew together in a frown, "Are you alright?" Alright? No. She was facing the man who brutally murdered her mother, how could she possibly be alright? Art is not mine

Why wouldn't Gregory touch her?

"Welcome home," the arrogant prat leaning off his doorway made the sarcastic remark. "You look like shit. You let a human do that to you?"

"Shouldn't he be in school?" August asked Jeffery.

"Young master Keith was sent home for his father's funeral,"

August hummed and walked in, ignoring the boy's scowl. "What did I miss?"

Jeffery caught him up as they got to his room,

August took a towel off the maid, "a witch?" Her aunt was a witch. "End your investigation there, I'll complete it," he ordered.

Jeffery nodded, and left.

When August freshened up, he went to the study.

"Who did this?" He asked,

Irene smiled stiffly, "young master Keith,"

Could he kill a relative? August wondered. "Fix it," he took his files and left.

This was extensive. Gregory experimented on all sorts of people.

"Jeffery, what did you say my brother was looking for?" August asked over the phone.

"A mystique,"

A mystique. They were rare. Humans possesesing special gifts. "Is the Richardson girl one?"

"Yes, her mother as well,"

Two mystiques in one bloodline. That wasn't possible. "Are you sure?"

"I am. Her mother was a late Bloomer. You know how they can be, Gregory gave up without trying, he didn't have enough time to."

Late Bloomer, those were extremely rare and problematic. "So he checked her daughter instead?"

"Yes; Kelly's blood was perfect. For some reason, Gregory never used it though. He kept it to the side saying he had another project, he never told me what it was,"

His will said, Kelly was the cure. A last resort. Why not use it? Why would Gregory choose death over the cure?

"He never tried it, at all?"

"No," Jeffery said, "but he was certain she was,"

August tapped his hand on the mahogany desk; what made Kelly Richardson so problematic that Gregory wouldn't touch her?

"Did he tell you what sort of mystique she was?"

Jeffery hummed in thought, "no. I thought perhaps she was unregistered. Just another freak creation of nature"

August took his coffee off Irene, "Set a meeting with Miss Richardson,"

"You're willing to try her?"

"What choice do I have?" Months. That was all he had left.

August pulled the file on Mr Whyte. He was ready to get serious with this bastard. He'd done so much to gain his attention, it would be a shame if he didn't give it.

Why was Grephar Police so incompetent? August pulled out his phone.

"August? I'll be darned. Is this your Obituary call?" A gruff voice came from the other end,

"I'm still alive, Major."

"Shame,"

August couldn't help his chuckle.

"What do you want, kid?"

"I need a favour,"

Marie had her reservations on New Grephar. That fortune teller was right, she never should have accepted the posting! She just got here and was under a ton of pressure. The first thing on her desk was a high profile case.

August Cline. Someone wanted to kill the eccentric billionaire. She called him eccentric because he was. This military file was extensive, yet she'd only seen so many black lines on her little tabby. Then again, cats weren't in the military.

"Did you hear?!" The 'totter', David Sharp rushed in.

"What is it now, Dave?" Kris asked from her desk. Marie shook her head and returned to her files: he was called the totter for a reason, his news was just as unsteady as his walk.

"This is legit!" He said

Kris rolled her eyes, "sure it is,"

"Out with it!" Kane yelled. He probably didn't know he was yelling; that copier was loud.

"August Cline is joining the investigation!"

Marie rolled her eyes, seriously?

"We know, Sherlock. He donated a ton of cash and equipment last week." Cross said as she came in with the coffee. It was nice having an intern.

Marie took her cup, "cash and equipment doesn't equate evidence, Cross," she warned

"Aye aye, captain." Cross did a mock salute, before handing the rest out. "It's still pretty cool,"

"Yeah, it's nice to be rich and throw money at everything," she didn't have anything against rich people, but they never got to do the groundwork, they never understood the struggle. They threw money and expected the masses to do it for them. Well, it wouldn't work this time!

"Rich people never understand the groundwork," Kris voiced her thoughts,

"Hallelujah. They throw money at everything and expect it to work!" Marie said. It was nice to vent.

"No, you guys don't get it! He's.."

"Good morning,"

That was a new voice, Marie turned to Dave and froze. Shit. She wasn't the only one. Standing next to the totter was a six foot tall Greek model in a turtleneck suit.

He looked around, "Guess, I get to do groundwork,"

Marie! My second baby!
