How I met her

Jody paced about in her office, trying to come up with a plan. An idea finally struck her and she turned to face Adam who was leaning on the desk.

“Adam? Let’s assume you’re a lame man. So, looking at this complicated murder case, what would be the first step you would want me to take?”

“Look for the murderer first then the body would be revealed later?” Adam arched his brow.

“Right! But that is totally wrong. That would be the last thing to do. But you know what the first thing is?”

“Investigations?”

“Yeah. Investigations and interrogations. You know why?”

“Because you’re a detective?” he arched his brows again.

“A-Adam? Are you fine?” Jody asked worriedly.

“Yes, I am. Why?”

“Why are you talking like that? You are supposed to be reasoning with me.”

“I am. Remember I’m still a lame man according to your assumptions.”

“Oh come on. Snap out of it. Now, be serious with me. Come out of that lame man’s body and be the real cop you are.”

“Okay. so you were saying?” Adam grinned.

“I am saying, that at this point, everyone is a suspect. We can’t trust anyone okay? Not even the Hemsworth.”

“Why can’t we trust the Hemsworth?”

“Because we don’t know how the family is. What we have to do now is to locate everyone close to Jane and anyone who had a conversation with her before this incident.”

“So are you now saying that all those people are the suspects, like until one of them is found guilty?” Adam reasoned.

“Yes, something like that.”

“Okay?”

“So now, are you ready to team with me so that we can accomplish this task together?

“Yes, I am ready to team with you,” Adam responded with a bold voice.

“Good. So the first thing we have to do now is to look for the people close to Jane and interrogate them. I mean her friends and parents including her rivals.”

“Do you want me to go get Carl and the rest right now?”

“No. First start with Dylan, okay? Make sure you record everything he’s saying.”

“What about you? Are you heading somewhere?” “Oh yes, I’m going to see the Hemsworth.” Jody took her bag.

“Did something happen?”

“Actually, something did happen.” Jody smiled.

“Hmmn… what happened?” Adam asked out of curiosity.

“She apologized.”

“For real? Wow! That is unbelievable.”

“Yeah, I know. See you later.” Jody waved before walking out of the office.

“Now Dylan, are you ready to talk?” Adam asked, facing him and he nodded.

“Tell me everything you know about Jane and please be honest.”

Dylan sighed. “Where do I start from?” he asked.

“The beginning.” Adam responded.

Dylan buried his face in his palms and after a long silence, he finally spoke.

“It was two weeks before summer,” he began slowly.

***

It was two weeks before summer!

Dylan isn’t the popular type of guy but he started to get noticed by students after the encounter he had with Vivian.

Vivian is the miss popular, university heartthrob and all round attractive, carefree and on the wild side.

Dylan had always had an interest in her but due to her popularity and her choice of guys, he wouldn’t dare to talk to her. Then a day came, a day that changed everything.

The atmosphere was dull. Dylan noticed Vivian’s mood. She looked depressed and unhappy. She wouldn’t even talk to anyone, not even her friends. Dylan felt the urge to walk up to her and ask what was wrong with her but he was too nervous. He decided to muster up the courage and ask her during closing hours.

Closing hours came and before Dylan could react, she already took her bag and was walking out of the classroom. His eye caught a notepad which fell from her bag and an idea came to him. He was about to pick the book up when he was chanced by another person.

He looked up at the person and saw a lady also looking at him with a smirk on her face.

Dylan raised a brow at her and she also did same.

“I’ll take that,” Dylan said and was about taking the book from her but she held her hand back.

Dylan was already getting impatient.

“Why would you take it? Doesn’t even belong to you.” She looked at the book.

“I never said it belonged to me,” Dylan snapped. “I was going to give it back.”

“I can do that,” She said and was about leaving when Dylan dragged her back.

“Just give it to me please, uhm… it’s important,” Dylan pleaded and she grinned at him.

“You should have said that earlier. You know, I’ve been watching you for quite some days. The way you og…”

“Who are you anyway?” Dylan sounded harsh, already feeling embarrassed that someone had caught him in his act.

“Bella,” she smiled and held out a hand.

Dylan took her hand and in a swift, he turned her and snatched the book away from her hand.

“Hmmn… not bad.” She complimented and Dylan gave her a smirk before dashing out through the door in a hurry.

Dylan scanned every faces, hoping to see Vivian. He had missed her now, all thanks to the so-called Bella.

He ran again and stopped, feeling frustrated. He ruffled his hair as disappointment crossed his face.

“Fuck,” he cursed angrily and hit the can that was in front of him.

He turned and was about to head back when his eye caught something. He looked towards the direction and there, about to cross the road stood Vivian, looking distraught.

Dylan sighted an incoming vehicle and that was when Vivian decided to take a step to cross the road. “NO!” Dylan screamed in his head and ran towards Vivian. He grabbed her and pushed her to himself, making her fall on him. The vehicle made a screeching sound as it stopped. Students already gathered to watch the scene as usual.

Dylan was still trying to recover from what just happened when he heard a voice that went straight into his head.

“Oh my God! Are you okay? did I hit you? Gosh! Mom warned me about taking the car. If she finds out about this, I’m so dead.”

Vivian got up from Dylan and gave the girl a resounding slap.

Dylan’s brows rose but he just kept mute.

“Just because you drive a car shouldn’t make you think you can ram into anyone you see on the road. Just look at yourself, you almost got me killed. If he hadn’t rescue me on time, you would probably be rotting in jail, got that?” Vivian blasted her and walked away.

“She was actually at fault, not me,” the girl muttered to herself while Dylan just watched her in admiration.

She looked up and saw him staring at her with a smile on his face.

“Hello, if you also want to slap me then go ahead.” She rolled her eyes at him.

Dylan snapped out of his thoughts and immediately replied, “No, I-I definitely won’t do that. I’m alright.”

“Well then, bye.” She said and got into her car before driving off.
