14: Just Get Better

Travis got home and slept, but was back in the hospital within five hours, when he got the call saying that his son had awoken. He turned over in the bed to inform Verna only to remember that she too was in intensive care.

He arrived at the hospital hairs off six o’clock. He was optimistic today because as far as he knew, Verna was not unconscious, just coughing…. And pregnant. His pace quickened as he headed toward the two most important people in his life.

They let him see his son, who was awake.

“Daddy!” he wheezed.

Travis put on a brave face and smiled. “Hey sport. You feeling better?”

Zane nodded but his eyes filled with tears. “It hurts so bad, Daddy.”

“It’s almost over, buddy. Hang in there.” He hugged him son as though he’d never let go.

A moment later Zane asked, “Where’s Berna?”

Not where’s mommy, Travis noted bitterly.

“She’s sleeping next door to you, son!”

“Oh. Okay…” and the boy drifted to sleep.
