The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Wolves

I woke up a good while later, and stretched slowly. First thing I noticed was that I was starving. I stretched my stiff body slowly until I felt something tug back. I snapped my head up with a growl. My head was restricted close to the wall by a chain that held my head close to the wall.

My wings were forced in close to my body by more chains. I was in a room with two werewolves, and an angry looking Goliath. My mana reservoir was completely dry. I couldn't really do anything with my mouth strapped shut like this. I surged to my feet slowly.

Adjusting myself into a more comfortable position as I laid down on my belly carefully. I couldn't lift my head to its full height like this so I was stuck with a holding my head about halfway up. Ethan, and Savannah weren't there so I didn't even bother looking for them. We were in a large room made of anti magic metal. Just a thin layer of steel protected the wolves from having their mana drained like mine was now.

I stared at the three of them for a bit before yanking on the chain holding my head. The grumbling of my painfully empty stomach made me hiss through my clenched teeth.

"He can't talk with his mouth stuck shut like that," Goliath almost chuckled at me.

"You want us to unchain this huge fucker?" big wolf guy looked at Goliath with disbelief.

"If he wanted to kill you," Goliath held his hands out for the keys, "He would have already."

Soren handed him the keys. Goliath walked up to me carefully.

"No biting big guy," Goliath smirked as he grabbed the chain that was currently forcing my mouth shut.

I stared at him with the brown of my left eye. Not the slightest bit amused by his tone. The chain around my face went slack. I stretched my stiff jaws as I raised my head up slowly. It felt like I was bigger.

My horns hit the roof right about the time my head reached its full height. I hissed tilting my head to look at the roof.

"That's going to get annoying fast," My voice was starting to get deeper.

"Did you get bigger?" Goliath had backed off while I was worried about the roof.

"Maybe," I snorted, "I'm starving. Is there anything I can eat?"

"How much do you need?" Goliath looked me up then down, "You're definitely bigger."

"And I'm starving," My stomach seemed to punctuate that statement with its own protest, "As much as you can get me."

I hissed at the clenching pain in my gut. It was all that I could think about. Goliath left me alone with the two remaining wolves.

"How long?" I directed my attention to Soren.

"Were you out?" Soren nodded, "Two days."

"At least now I know why I feel like my insides are eating themselves," I glanced around the room quickly, "What is this place?"

Silence.

"You do know I can probably get out of these," I pulled the chains holding me tight.

"Don't," Soren tensed.

I tensed a bit more making the chains groan.

"I don't like this," I tapped my talons on the metal floor, "I can't hide without any mana."

My talons were starting to put divots into the metal of the floor. I growled angrily as I thought about my empty stomach, and mana reserve.

"Are you always this pissy?" Soren was staying out of my range.

It was a tense silence as I waited for them to say or ask something.

"What are you?" Soren was the first one to break the tense silence.

"Unoriginal," I snorted, "I'm a dragon. A storm dragon to be more specific."

"A dragon," Soren looked at me funny, "You look a lot like a Wyvern."

"I've been told that before," I tilted my head slightly, "But I am not a wyvern."

"Are you sure your not just an intelligent mutation of a wyvern?" Soren asked again.

Angry tension ran through me. As my claws that were doing damage to the floor before flat out dug into the cheap metal.

"More like wyverns are a stupid watered down variant of dragon," I growled angrily standing up, and breaking three or four of the chains holding me as well as slamming my head into the metal roof, "I am not anywhere near the pathetic stupid beast they are."

I shook my head, and laid back down slowly. I didn't know where that anger came from, but it had hit me with the force of a sledge hammer. Why did I get that angry over something I didn't even really know?

Apologies. A portion of this anger is caused by inherited memory.

Inherited memory? From the crystal?

Yes.

"Sorry about that," I let the rest of the tension in my muscles go, "That hit a nerve."

"A big one apparently," Soren withdrew his claws slowly.

"I don't want to kill you," I spoke softly.

Mostly reminding myself that I didn't want to hurt them.

"That's great," Soren didn't relax completely.

"Look," I pulled the broken chains off my wings casually with my tail, "I'm hungry, and this empty mana reservoir leaves my vulnerable to exposure. You both know what happens if I'm discovered. I'd be dead by now if you'd told them so my question is why haven't you?"

They both stared at me in confusion.

"Take these chains off so I can refill my reserves," I snorted, "And I'll feel a lot better."

I loosened my wings slowly. They felt better when they weren't pinned to me. I dropped my head down, and laid it down on the floor. Letting my neck relax to the floor as well. I didn't need to give them a reason to panic.

"Are those the same clothes you were wearing in the fight?" I could barely detect the scent of blood, but it was making me hungry so I started to breath more through my mouth than nose.
