The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Memories

I shook off the images that were still circling around my mind. I'd only seen a small part of her life, but she'd had a good one for a while. What happened to bring her all the way out here?

Would user like to store the crystal for absorption?

(Yes) (No)

Yes. The crystal glowed brightly before vanishing into thin air.

New spell unlocked. Enhanced regeneration.

Enhanced regeneration?

Dragons have incredible regenerative abilities. Lost limbs are only a temporary state of being for them. Enhanced regeneration speeds the regrowth process. The more mana user supplies the faster the user can regrow lost limbs.

Sweet. Can I use the mana from the stored crystal to regenerate my arm?

Yes. Would user like system to use suggested action?

(Yes) (No)

Yes please. My stump started tingling. The tingling progressed to full on itching as my arm started to grow back quickly. It took less than a minute for my entire arm to grow back. I wiggled my new fingers.

My fingers tingled as if they were asleep. I clenched my fist slowly, and then unclenched it as the numbness wore off.

"Cool," I looked at Goliath with a smile, "Told you it was worth it."

"For you maybe," Goliath frowned, "I still haven't finished what I came down here to do."

"Sourpuss," I dropped into a playful crouch.

Goliath narrowed his eyes at me. A sound up the tunnel reminded me that the power source for the barrier was gone.

"We're not safe here anymore," I went from playful to lethal serious, "Her protection is gone. Time to go."

I healed Goliath. I would need his strength sooner rather than later. My wings pulled in tight as I growled at what was coming.

"What is it?" Goliath tensed as he started growing in size slowly.

"More Jackers," I strode out in front.

Inhaling slowly as I prepared to breath lightning onto the Jackers coming down the tunnel. I can't pierce their armor so I'll have to focus on using their hard shells against as well as do some damage to their joints. We still needed to focus on escaping so as we damage these beasts we would move down the tunnel little by little. I rushed forward. I couldn't get poisoned by them now so I would draw their attention.

I could always use my basilisk venom in a pinch so there was that as well. I leapt up over the first one. Grabbing it's stinger, and slamming it down. Breaking through its shell easily. Then electrifying its insides.

Cooking it from the inside. I leapt off of the one I just cooked to distract another two with a quick flap of my wings.

"Goliath!" I shouted, "They can't poison me so let me act as bait."

Goliath responded to my change in tactic. Changing his own to rely on me taking the beasts attention. I wouldn't be able to kill as many of them as I wanted with him backing me up, but I would survive so the lost XP would have to be tomorrows worry. We alternated between dashing through the Jackers to fighting with me at the forefront to draw attention. There were a few times where I had to take a hit to keep Goliath from being poisoned again, but with all the crystals I was collecting I could heal anything they did to me before I took another hit.

I kept collecting crystals in a ball of ice that I had floating above me. When I ran low on mana I ate a crystal. Luckily for us once we go close to the exit of the tunnel back into the main part of the canyon they backed off preferring to stay in their space. They hissed, and stabbed their stingers into the ground in some sort of threat display. I snorted, and inhaled slowly.

Not stopping until my lungs felt like they were going to burst. Pouring my entire mana reserve into my lungs as I shot out more lightning than I'd ever down before so much that it felt like my own throat was burning as the electricity travelled down the tunnel in the frantic manner that lightning liked to move in. It lit up the tunnel as it dashed down it in a quick flash. Killing the weaker jackers that were closer to us, and immobilizing all the big ones at the entrance. If I wasn't standing on all fours I would have grabbed my throat when I gagged afterward.

"That was a bit excessive," Goliath boomed as he looked down at me.

I was used to him having a loud voice, but his voice was even louder when he got huge. I snorted at him which was a mistake with my throat not completely healed yet. Sending me into a coughing fit.

"Ouch," My voice was raspy like I had a sore throat.

Goliath actually started laughing at me as he shrunk back down to his normal size. By now we were both far past normal exhaustion so we sat down to take a short rest. Goliath sat on a rock while I just sat like a cat or dog might.

"What do you plan to do with those?" Goliath pointed at my big ice ball full of crystals.

"Not sure," I melted some of the ice so that one could fall down into my open hand, "I can't just sell them up top. Not yet anyways. No one would believe that I got these myself." I sniffed it cautiously, "But then again I could always just eat it."

"Eat it?" Goliath looked at me funny, "What do you mean eat it?"

"You didn't see me eating them when we were fighting?" I rolled the crystal from my right hand to my left, "How do you think I had so much mana to spare?"

Ooo
