The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Basilisk

My head shot up. I hadn't been thrown back by the Basilisk. I'd been thrown back by Wyatt. I looked at him in horror. The Basilisk had its fangs buried deep in his shoulder.

His legs were buried deep in the ground, and his body was shuddering from the amount of work it was having to do.

"Are you trying to get yourself killed?" he growled.

He was glowing faintly. The Basilisk tried to draw its head back, but Wyatt didn't let it go. He dug his claws into its jaws. Letting his mana loose caused ice to form on his scales. The Basilisk hissed angrily as he whipped his big head back, and forth angrily.

"Shoot his fucking eyes," Wyatt yelled as he started clawing chunks out of the Basilisk's jaw.

His words unfroze me as I scrambled to my feet. Aiming for the eyes like I'd been told. The Basilisk bit down harder drawing an animalistic cry out of Wyatt as ice started spreading along the Basilisk's scales as well. He wasn't turning to stone yet, but he would, and I would die when that happened. So I would help him while I could.

I aimed, and fired at his face. Some of the shots clipped Wyatt, but they didn't look like they could penetrate the scales of either one. Wyatt started biting at the big snakes head as well as clawing. The Basilisk slammed Wyatt down into the ground. Wyatt cried out again.

In that moment when it had slammed Wyatt it had gotten quite a bit closer to me than it had been before. I managed to hit the big bastard in the eye. It's head shot up as its body started coiling out of the cave quickly. Hissing, and spitting angrily. Suddenly there was a lot more snake to dodge.

I started firing at whatever came closest to me. I didn't care anymore if the bullets actually did any damage. Wyatt roared, and his head shot into the Basilisks damaged eye. The Basilisk screamed. It's head flinging up away from me.

I lost sight of Wyatt for a few seconds, and then the Basilisks head came back down. Slamming into the ground hard as it's body coiled randomly without any pattern to it anymore. I realized why once I saw its head. Wyatt had buried his head as far into its skull as he could with pulling his shoulder out of its mouth. He started pulling his head out of the basilisks eye slowly.

I felt sick as the sound of his horns, and spines dragging across the inside of the basilisks skull reached my ears. I turned away from the whole disgusting scene. I could still hear it all so it didn't help much. Jesus. What little I had in my stomach visited my mouth for a few seconds before I managed to get it back down.

There was a crack, and then the sound of hard breathing. I turned around, and looked at the bloodied Wyatt as he yanked the Basilisk's jaws off of his shoulder. He was broken, and bloodied in multiple places. He had the Basilisk's crystal in his mouth. He dropped it as his wounds healed impossibly quickly.

All of his wounds except for the fang wounds. The crystal was one of the biggest ones I'd ever seen. About half the size of my entire head. Wyatt limped over to where he'd dropped his bag halfway up the hill, and picked it up in his mouth. He turned, and started to come back to me.

Then his eyes went wide as he growled. His shoulder went from it's usual white, and grey to stone grey. He dropped his bag with obvious mental effort to get his body to listen.

"Let's go in the Basilisk's cave," I stood up, "You're turning to stone from the Basilisk's venom."

He hissed in pain as he forced himself to keep moving. The stone that was his shoulder cracked, and bled as he forced himself to move. The stone receded slightly as he picked up his bag. His body was trying to fight off the venom.

"Come on," I ran over to take his bag from him, "I'll get the bags. Just go in the cave."

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Wyatt hissed as the stone spread slightly.

"A Basilisk this size will have a large territory," I picked up the big crystal from the Basilisk, and stuffed it in what little extra space I had left in my bag, "Nothing big will be cocky enough to come here until the smell spreads."

Wyatt nodded as he hissed from pain again. He got moving a little faster. He lifted his arm, and went into a three legged stride. I let him go into the cave before me. The Basilisk's body blocked off most of the entrance.

The cave was larger inside. Wyatt walked as far as he could before he collapsed. The sound of stone hitting stone was a disturbing sound coming from a living creature falling. I opened my water, and poured some of it on a rag in my bag. I started wiping the blood off of him.

He curled up tightly as he growled. He was in pain. He was fighting a losing battle. My hopes weren't high for his survival. I just stayed close.

He'd saved my life so this was the least I could do. Even if I was just sitting by watching him die. I pulled a glow stick out of my bag, and clicked it. Giving us a little light as the last rays of daylight faded from our view. He shuddered as the stone alternated between receding, and spreading.

It was spreading slightly faster than it was receding. He might last till morning.

"The crystals," Wyatt huffed out between breaths as the shivering set in, "Give them all to me."

"You're going into shock," I placed my hand on his stone shoulder, "You don't know what you're saying."

"I need the mana," He huffed out, "Just the little crystals."

This didn't sound like delirium. I pulled all the little crystals out of the bag, and started feeding them to him one by one. The stone started receding back from where it had spread to his legs until it was just the patch on his shoulder again. I hoped it was enough because the only crystal I had left now was the one from the Basilisk. It was larger, and much more powerful then the little ones I'd fed him.
