The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

The impact shattered the frozen ground, but he wasn't harmed. The smaller ones were hurt by the fall. Four of them weren't able to fly anymore. Out of six that wasn't a bad number. The one I wanted to get hurt by the fall was perfectly fine.

I snarled aloud as I resumed inhaling. The small army of wyverns headed my way made me tense as I dove toward them. I blasted the closest two with ice. It wasn't enough to freeze them, but they were having trouble moving with their limbs partially frozen. They weren't going to die since they had enough movement to keep themselves in the air.

I needed to fix that. I forced the air above them to push them down with more speed. I dodged two wyverns that made it to me. I was going to strike back when Savannah's flames interrupted me. Searing into the flesh of the wyvern.

The other hit an invisible barrier, and was shoved away. I roared. Turning a lightning blast on both of them. They fell away. Visibly wounded, and burned by my lightning.

The smaller ones weren't strong enough to handle my lightning head on. That was good that meant I could still kill the smaller ones. All I needed to do first was hit them head on. I pulled in my left wing quickly. Before the massive male could take a bite out of it.

I inhaled again as I got ready to blast the massive male again. I wasn't fast enough to dodge him as his talons came down. His talons raked down my back, and curved around my side down my leg. I lashed out with air pushing him away from me. Blood poured out of the three long slashes.

Ethan cried out as he clung to my spines. He was taking on a good amount of my pain. Savannah threw her flames at the massive male. Her flames didn't penetrate his hard scales. I was nearly upside down.

Savannah clung to the muscle of my wing. Both of them started drawing on borrowed power. I needed to get another saddle. They'd saved me from some trouble just now. Having them with me in battle wasn't a bad choice despite how much weaker they were then me.

They gave me time to react to attacks coming from my blind spots. I snapped my tail out. The strike hit his leg as he went to attack me again. Knocking his talons off course so he missed me when he tried to rake his talons through me a second time. I allowed myself in continue falling as I struggled to open a portal. The pain Ethan was taking on for me was helping me think clearly.

It was helping me focus on opening a portal so I could get out of here. Two wyverns got between me, and the portal I was creating. My teeth clenched as I forced more mana out. I didn't have a destination in mind, and the portal didn't open like I expected it to. Space fractured as it was forced to open.

A black abyss came into being before collapsing in on itself. Forming a small black circle the size of a basketball. The black ball started sucking in everything around it as space continued to collapse in on itself. We were the only ones that weren't effected by the pull. Half a dozen of the smaller wyverns were sucked into the black dot before being spit out looking more like ground meat then the beasts they went in as.

I kept on providing the black dot with mana. If it was going to keep on sucking my enemies in then I wasn't going to stop using whatever that was. I still needed a portal to get out of here. The second portal collapsed even faster then the first. I wouldn't be able to portal out of here until I got rid of the spatial anomaly.

The spatial anomaly was the only thing keeping the small wyverns off my back. I dodged another rake of the big ones claws. I couldn't handle a full fledged attack from him. I simply wasn't strong enough to handle it. That was more frustrating then I cared to deal with.

I needed to get out of here, but this big guy was able to resist the pull of the black dot as blood, and gore fell on the landscape below. The black dot had munched over a dozen wyverns so far. I was grateful for the XP, but I didn't have time to enjoy it with a massive monster coming down on me. I flipped around so I was right side up again, and snapped my wings out. The black dot sailed past my neck without effecting me at all.

The massive wyvern screeched angrily as the dot tried to suck him in. It only got a portion of his left wing as he sailed past it. He roared angrily, and lisped noticeably in flight. The damaged wing was causing him to sink on the left side. Slowing him down a good amount.

Now I had a chance. I cut of the mana from the black dot as I dodged the wyverns as I was trying to head downward. The black dot vanished in an explosion of spatial distortion. Disturbing nearly every single molecule of space within a hundred feet. Half a dozen small unstable portals opened up around the explosion.

Some of which opened within the bodies of a few wyverns. Blood sprayed from the mouths of the two unlucky wyverns. They dropped out of the sky. I dropped through a portal so I was back above the battlefield. Now I had the time I needed to focus.

I pictured the first place I could think of as space directly around me distorted. This wasn't a normal portal. This was faster. I'd never done anything like this before. Space folded in on itself for a second, and then I was in the middle of the guild.

Slamming into the ground like a bowling ball. Blood spraying everywhere from the giant gashes on my back as broken scales dug into the ground, and walls around me. Ethan was thrown from my back as Savannah wrapped around my wing muscles. I could feel her ribs breaking through our bond. Ethan broke an arm as he collided into the ground.
