The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

"Not letting Eric have them?" Savannah smiled sadly.

"No," I nudged the freshest body further into the cavern.

I'd never expected such a violent creature to actually care for anything besides revenge. The slow inhale was the only sound in the cavern. The roar of the flames as they caught was quiet. Slow. Maybe even a little sad.

Once the flames start really catching they roared. I kept on adding flames until there was nothing left but ashes. I'd completely lost track of time. My bonded had gathered in the big cavern behind me. I crossed the distance through the narrow passage, and found them sitting around a fire in the pit.

I didn't feel like going back to the guild right now. My muscles were screaming after all that time sitting. I could feel all the damage I'd done to my wings the most of all. I dropped my empty wing over the fire pit. Enclosing my bonded within a warm space.

My muscles needed a break. I flicked my tail as I placed my head under my wing with them. None of us had any intent of leaving here tonight. It was time to sleep. We would all sleep here tonight.

None of us said anything about it. Yet we all agreed. It was an oddly pleasant sensation for us all to agree like this. I wished we could always agree like this. I lowered my wing full of eggs slowly.

Setting it down on the ground gently so I wouldn't have to hold the weight up when I did fall asleep. I flicked my tail casually. Jax was the first to pass out. He needed more sleep then the other two for some reason. He was splayed out on the stone bench he'd created for them to sit on.

Practically forcing the other two off the bench. Savannah was maintaining the flame using nothing but her mana. Ethan was next. Savannah lost her focus on maintaining the flame not long after Ethan fell asleep, and joined him in the realm of blissful ignorance. I watched them for a few hours before joining them in sleep.

I had to resist the urge to stretch when I woke up. I didn't want to damage the eggs. They probably had similar toughness to that of dragon eggs but that didn't mean much. They could still break if dropped. The difference was the height at which they could be dropped.

I pushed aside the urge to stretch, and raised my wings slowly. Uncovering my still sleeping bonded. Savannah, and Ethan woke up not long after I raised my wings. Jax slept for another hour. None of us really moved until then.

My mana had nearly fully restored by then so it wasn't difficult for me to open a portal to Calen's office. Calen's surprised expression was comical when a portal just big enough for my head appeared.

"Can you pass these along to Vermillion?" I set the large bag of head sized eggs on the floor next to his desk, "And make sure everyone gets the evidence we recovered from Eric's illegal lab."

"You really need to stop talking to me like I work for you," Calen frowned at me right before the portal closed.

I helped my bonded up on my back. Jumping up into the air once they were in place. It was a four hour flight back to the guild, and I wasn't in a hurry to make it. Eric would definitely be awake by now, and he would not be happy about our last interaction. He'd launched an attack on me the last time I'd come close to the front line with minimal reason to do so.

Now that he had an obvious reason to attack me he wouldn't hold back. I really hoped I'd built up some sort of good will with the members of the guild. Maybe they wouldn't attack me right away. I'd just taken out the biggest threat to their guild. That had to count for something.

The sky was surprisingly clear. I didn't think I'd ever seen the sky this clear on this planet. I hadn't seen many beasts in the area. I didn't know if it was because of the wyverns or if they were just avoiding me. I could sense the disturbance in spatial flow.

I'd done a lot of damage to the spatial flow of the area. I hadn't been able to sense it before, but now that I could sense it I knew that a lot of portals would open up here for a while. It was the only way to relieve the spatial tension on the area. I halfway expected something to attack me on my way back to the guild now that all the predators in the area were gone. I was drained.

I didn't really feel like fighting. It was deceptively peaceful. I hadn't had a moment of peace since I left the werewolves island. Funny to think that I was more at peace when surrounded by a literal pack of wolves. I fell into a nice peaceful glide.

I found that my bonded made the decision to switch around the seating arrangement. Putting Jax, who was the only one that didn't have dragon scale armor, between the other two. They wanted to make this flight in one go. Jax would get cold much faster then the other two. Putting him between them would allow us to fly longer.

I was halfway tempted to chuckle. I held in the chuckle, and stayed level for them. I flicked my tail casually while in flight. Causing a tremble to go down my spine while they were moving along it. Savannah, and Jax both knew it was coming so they weren't particularly surprised, but Jax.

He nearly screamed like a girl. The only reason he was able to hold it in was because Ethan was holding onto his arm.

"That wasn't funny," Jax tried shouting over the wind.
