The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

I shot lightning into the horde. The lightning branched out to the other rats until the power of the strike ran out. Killing a lot of them in a single strike. I slammed my hands down, and erected over a dozen stone walls to slow the rats down. I hadn't had time to test out my advanced murderous intent before now.

I released my intent full force.

Intent will only affect enemies.

Good. I snarled as I jumped into he air. Bringing my wings down to maintain a good distance from the ground. I inhaled again to release another blast of lightning at the rats that were trapped on the other side of the walls. Killing another batch of them.

I didn't like this at all. More of them were coming through as fast as they could get through the portal. Some were even killing themselves on the unstable edges of the portal. Why were they so desperate to get through the portal? The only reason we hadn't been overwhelmed by them yet was because they were fighting the other beasts as well as us.

Some of the rats were headed up the hill to where my cavern was hidden. I breathed fire down between the walls. All the way around the village. The fire stopped the rats from advancing temporarily. I flew down over the rift that was causing you the most trouble.

I focused my spatial ability on the rift. If I could stop the rats then we stood a much better chance of getting this whole mess under control. My space element concentrated around the rift as I rained lightning down on the rats that were coming through. How long do I need to seal the rift system?

9 minutes 30 seconds.

System focus on that for me. I breathed another blast of lightning into the rats trying to come through. This was taking way to long. I breathed another blast of lightning into the rats horde. I didn't have a choice though.

Even if it felt as if I wasn't helping. Even if everything looked as if it were going to fall apart I couldn't stop. I dropped down into the middle of the rat's horde. I let my mana loose. My mana wreaked havoc on all of my elements.

Lightning, and fire flashed along my scales as the ground froze. Frozen earth broke away from the flat of the earth, and came up impaling rats that rushed headfirst into them without hesitation. The rats barely reacted to the deaths of their kin around them. I snarled, and lashed out at the rats that were trying to swarm me. They weren't strong enough to get through my scales, but I couldn't say the same about my membranes.

They ate away at the membranes of my wings as I roared in anger, and pain. The rats flinched away from the roar briefly before charging at me once again to tear me apart. System how much longer?

4 min 15 sec.

Too long. The rats didn't like noise.

"Wolves you'd better cover your ears," I roared into the night.

I knew what I did the last time I messed with someone who didn't like noise. I focused on my wind element, and amplified the next roar so loud that it burst the ears of all the rats that were close to me. Suddenly they couldn't balance themselves as they ran. Falling all over each other as they tried to reach me. I actively started trying to absorb the mana I was breathing in for the brief second that I was not being attacked.

Another breath, and my lungs were charged with lightning elemental energy that I launched at the closest batch of rats. I couldn't look out for the wolves, and fight all the rodents that were getting in my way. The tide of the battle was turning in my favor slowly, but I wasn't sure if it was the same for the wolves. I jumped in the air, and snapped my damaged wings open. I was missing about half of the membranes on both of my wings.

I couldn't keep myself in the air, but I could use the air time to check on everyone. The wolves weren't doing very good, but I couldn't leave the portal until it closed. My wings were damaged, and I was overrun by the horde. Nothing was more frustrating then not being able to do anything. Rage overwhelmed my emotions.

The violent animalistic side of me that I usually kept buried underneath the calm outside was set loose. My movements changed as I went into a killing frenzy. Shredding the rats around me with a carnal wrath that made even the nastiest rabid beast look harmless in comparison. My body moved in a way that slashed, and diced all the creatures around me. My wing membranes regenerated at an accelerated rate automatically.

How much longer I wondered with the less vicious, sane part of my mind. System.

30 seconds.

I let my body continue fighting on vicious hate filled instinct. I only had to hold them here a little bit longer. The portal collapsed, and the rats stopped coming through. I shook off my vicious impulses, and jumped again. The wolves were already struggling the last time I saw them.

Now they were barely hanging on as rain started to pelt the the island. That vicious rage rose up in my throat again in the form of a growl so loud that every beast within a hundred feet of me froze. A notification ding went off in my head, but my mind was too occupied by the sudden appearance of my three bonded in the middle of the town. How did they get there? I was so consumed with the fighting that I hadn't noticed them moving.

They'd skimmed around most the battle in the center of the island, and used the beach route to go around to the side of the town. From there all it took was a clever use of Ethan's telekinesis to get right where they were needed on the backlines to help relieve the wolves that were protecting the children. I charged up a massive amount of lightning elemental mana on my wings, and released it all with the downward swing of my wings. Causing a burst of electricity to hit everything below me. Killing everything that was directly below me, and lighting up the night as the lightning spread through every creature close enough to take its charge until it lost its power.
