The Library Assault (1)

A gate screeched as it opened and many dark figures shuffled their way in.

"Dan, how many did you spot inside?" As it turned out, the operation was carried out the very night of the day I awoke.

"Five altered grade two" That was how many altered individuals I spotted on my way inside. I had snuck in through the front door, which was surprisingly guarded by mostly ordinary people, and made my way out of the building to open the back gate.

It was a bit ballsy to move in like that but after the bouts of mutation, my ability to cloak was incrementing even if by small bits. It had taken even Kaiser a second to notice I was there when I went to ask about the sunglasses.

Kaiser didn't do much with this information, he didn't reconsider ways to take advantage of it or anything. The operation was still a go with the first plan and this was partly my fault.

The scene I caused was bound to put the wastes on alert. While the possibility for cooperation existed, most people in the underground couldn't be trusted which… wasn't really a surprise.

About our current numbers… As one of the largest gangs, Kaiser had a stunning number of 97 members at his disposal. Didn't actually sound that impressive right?

The gangs in my alternate world had numbers in the thousands and were sometimes deeply ingrained into the lives of some. I could only assume this was a byproduct of losing a large chunk of humanity. There was also the matter of the government keeping a tight leash on literally everything.

Yet, not even half of those people were actually present at the headquarters which had previously given me the erroneous impression that they were small in numbers.

After getting guns pulled out on me by presumed civilians, I knew better than to make that mistake.

That they had so many members didn't mean we brought all of them, however. The rushed situation coupled with the stupidity of such an action meant there were only 40 members for this semi-large scale raid.

After just a bit of running, we reached the building. To be exact, we reached a bland gray wall with only a single metal door as the way in. There were also two industrial garage doors but going in through there was no different from announcing you were raiding them.

Since I left the backdoor unlocked on my way out, it was the simplest point of entry.

"There are four regular people in there" I didn't mention them initially since it was pretty hard for them to notice me no matter what. Opening doors in the presence of altered individuals was risky but in front of ordinary people, I might as well have fazed right through them.

That meant these people weren't a threat to me never mind the experienced gangsters. In fact, Kaiser didn't even flinch before pressing his finger on his throat and sliding it across motioning a clear-cut.

I got the message so I entered the building.

The lights were on. It was as if government buildings didn't even have to pay for electricity. So these guys confident in the light didn't even have basic vigilance.

One was sitting, another was on their phone, the third seemed to be taking their job seriously but I could tell they were trying to step on cracks in the ground specifically, and lastly one was sleeping while sitting.

My first task was sneaking towards the person sitting on a chair. Why? The person patrolling while stepping on cracks would turn their backs to them momentarily. As long as I snuck behind chair guy… I could get rid of walking guy too.

They were sitting on a chair near the hallway door so I had to do some real careful sneaking. Fortunately there were a lot of empty pallets and leftover construction materials. After using them as cover, I wasted no time plunging my knife into my target's neck.

"U-" I covered their mouth which was threatening to groan in pain.

As soon as life left his body, I ran straight towards the patrol guy and stabbed him from behind. A bad move, they were about to cry out! My eyes widened when-

"CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE THE WASTE KING!!!!!" The mobile game the other played was familiar to me, waste miner extreme!

I quickly finished the patrol guy while secretly wondering how many cracks he stepped on, and I immediately ran over to the exhausted man on his phone.

"Huh? Hah!?!" He noticed my figure and my blood-coated knife a bit too late.

"Argh-!" I skillfully threw the dagger right at his chest causing it to sink into his body. With my extraordinary strength, it quite literally disappeared into the man's body.

He collapsed after some struggling and the man that slept like a log was my next target.

"Hm? He is dead already…" That explained why he didn't react to the screams. The man seemed a bit grizzly could it be a natural death?

Just as I stood up, the members entered the garage in a hurry. They were all heading towards me and the hallway door.

"Great job" Kaiser said patting me on the back. He gazed straight into my eyes as he did. I don't think he saw anything in them but he quickly turned to face forward.

"Alright men, the plan officially starts from here! Wreak havoc!" Kaiser declared loudly with a daring smile.

"""Hurrah!""" The members all said with smiles hiding either excitement or trepidation.

The hallway door was bust open. The bright hallway decorated with exquisite paintings was what greeted them.

At the end of this corridor was a set of double doors which all members ignored. Smith Moral wouldn't be found reading from the bookshelves. He had to be further in!

Everyone turned in the opposite direction. Apart from a couple of odd doors, there was also a single door at the end.

"Jimmy, take three, check those rooms and maintain the flank. All else with me" Kaiser said as we all ran down the hall and went past one of those doors.

The number to watch our flanks were small but there weren't enough people otherwise. The real danger was past the door which Seamus positioned himself to open.

"Opening!" Seamus shouted gripping the doorknob when suddenly.

BANG BANG BANG

Shots were fired.

"Who the f*ck!?!" Someone cursed angrily before coming to an abrupt realization. That wasn't any of us!!!

Seamus who had only turned the knob was not being shot at either. The sounds came from behind the double door leaving only one option, a hostile takeover!

"Those stupid bast*rds!" Kaiser cursed.

"I love them, we got our distraction, let's go!" Kaiser continued with sincerity. The distraction portion of the plan had been scrapped initially but now… Another gang came to do them a favor.

Magnificent.

Seamus burst open the door for real this time.

Magnificent. The rows of guns aimed at us were impressively beautiful how they shined under the chandelier in the large open-spaced room.

These gunmen were placed on the second floor which had a view down onto us on the first.

"Back into the hall!" Kaiser said before quite literally grabbing the door that had been bust out of its hinges as a shield for himself.

RATAT BANG BANG ATATATAT

The sound of gunshots were varied and the flash of the muzzles were blinding. Sparks were scattered as over 10 people fired indiscriminately towards the door from which no more than 5 people had exited.

"We've been betrayed!" Hawk shouted from within the hallway, he had grabbed me as soon as the first shot rang out.

"You are right" I said in assent. It was impossible for them to expect us otherwise. Whoever the traitor was might even be among us given the short notice.

"The gunmen will surely be closing in! Kaiser!" The door had already been riddled with holes at this point. The man behind it could not have been fine!

I'm considering sticking with a certain chapter name and just numbering them for as long as it is relevant. What do you guys think, should I do them like this from now on or think up something unique each time?

Thanks for reading~
