"When did that happen?" Silas asked. "They seemed fine."
"It happened because of Daphne's jealousy and insecurity," Esme mumbled dejectedly. "I'll tell you later. Right now, I need to go check on Ellie. Mommy bought a lot of toys for her." She giggled. "And she is excited about it."
"I wish I could be there with you, see her excitement," Silas mumbled longingly.
"Bear it for a few days," Esme whispered teasingly. "I'll call you later."
Before Silas could respond, she gently ended the call with a simple "Bye," her smile lingering as she tucked the phone away and turned back toward the house.

Esme went to Julian's office. The afternoon sunlight was dim and the breeze was crisp. She had chosen to walk deliberately, hoping that if John was tailing her, he would make his move.
