Tell me what it is

I sat down and watched drew the bright summer sky when two men in military clothes came. "Hey, as you probably know, we're in a war against the Adrets and we're short on men" He said standing over me. I already knew what he was going to say. I couldn't refuse. I'd heard that if you say no you're killed immediately. "Sure I'll join" I said putting my board down. This could be the last painting of my life. After five painstakingly slow hours we arrived at the building. It was completely isolated and was right next to the shore. "I'll give you a short tour around the place" he said lifting up his goggles. The place was crowded. I didn't understand what they meant by "short of men". I followed him and observed the people. All of them were so muscular compared to me a thirty year old artist. I wasn't born for this. I followed him into the cafeteria which was completely empty. He then showed me the dorms and the training room. "You're not gonna need this because you'll be piloting the mechs". I sighed in relief and walked to the dorms. There a tall man with glasses stood. "Hurry up and change, you'll start practise this night". I was frozen. Already, it'd only been about twenty five minutes since I came in and I already had training. I checked the closet which looked like a beehive. I took It out and it was a military suit with some material that looked like bendable metal. It ended at my wrist and my foot and was attached to the helmet so I had to open it as if it was a jacket. I struggled to put it on and had to run to catch up with the others. We passed through a bridge which had mechs encased with glass inside. Half of us went to the bottom floor and the other half which included me stayed on the top. We the mech had a button which made it lower it's hand and it picked me up. I went in and it didn't look as complicated as I thought. There was one button. "Hello, this is your commander, my name is Rester and I will teach you how to pilot a mech" he said. I looked around the room to find where the speaker was coming from. "The first step is, connect the tubes with the Felica on your wrist and foot". I looked around and noticed that there were tubes planted in the wall. I plugged it in to where I thought was the Felica. "Now, press the button". I leaned forward and pressed it. The Felica lit up. It glowed and I stared at it. "Those are the basics to turn it on and off, now to the movement". The wall behind me fell. "Your mechs copy whatever you do with a slight latency due to it being a relatively new invention, now then try walking out onto the ship. I turned around and so did the mech. It felt like a bigger version of me. I took a step and counted to how long it takes to send an instruction to the mech. It took about half a second which wasn't that long. I walked out onto the boat. There was a hole which was where I assume the lower floors went. "Now there are options that this facility gives you which many others don't which is the choice to pu extra armour at the cost of mobility or keep it like this but for now we're going to choose mobility". Armour would be good but at the cost of mobility. I had to have a way to run away in battle. "Now go back in, we'll resume your training tomorrow morning". We went back to the dorms and got back into our normal clothes. You could keep your clothes and the facility provided us with other clothes which were basically just white t-shirts and shorts. "Hey are you new around here" asked a man who was oddly short. "Yea, they just took me while I was painting, damn I didn't even get to finish it" I said sitting down on the bed. "I see, same thing, I was taking pictures while on my hike on the Endo mountains, them they came along and asked me to join, or rather they told or I'd be killed". The next day came and instead of waking up peacefully, I woke up to the noise of alarms. "Quick get in you mechs!" shouted Rester. I sprinted initially to the exit but it was covered by stone. I dashed towards the bridge and got in my mecha. The doors where already out and I had to get on the boat and go around to get on the land. As I turned around I saw the enemy. Beneath their feet were us. I ran along the walls when I felt something was off. My vision was tilted. I looked to my right and a fist mark was on my mech. I saw the enemy mech and punched it back. It hit the glass and it caves in on me. It began to pummel each layer until the fist reached me. My world went black and my last sight was a mech standing over me, then an eye, it shone so bright that I covered my eyes. It was then I awoke in a Wasteland. Tell me what it is.
