Run Away

Late in the evening, Weisheng returned to the residence with a pile of reports. Hai was helping him carry a few of them. They dropped all of the reports on Weisheng's study table.

Hai reached for the door, looking back at Weisheng, "Are you planning to sleep or study?" He asked, "Should I send help over?"

Weisheng raised an eyebrow in confusion while leaning over the table to arrange the reports meticulously.

"I mean, should I call for help if you want to study? We can help out," Hai suggested.

Weisheng nodded, "Please do that. I would love more help right now."

Hai smiled and left the room to gather everyone. On their way to the residence, Weisheng had vented to Hai about how the police investigation seemed rushed. It felt like the authorities didn't put any effort into it.

Someone among the higher-ups wanted the case of Yun Shui's murder to die down. It was too familiar to Weisheng's father's case. At that time, authorities hadn't put any effort into the investigations and even lost the reports that had crucial evidence.

That's why Hai suggested everyone's help with the investigation. Spirits had more reach than humans anyway.

Within twenty minutes, everyone gathered in Weisheng's room to go through the current reports together.

"What is this?" Ru frowned after going through the reports, "Whoever submitted this probably failed their police exam," He complained.

"It doesn't even feel like a murder case report…" Qiang murmured, "How do you deal with these things?" She asked Weisheng.

"Usually, the Prosecution visits the site as well," Weisheng explained, "We visited, and we can confirm that the site looks like described by the police. So, our take is that the suspect was meticulous."

Xiaoling hummed, "So, what will the Prosecution do?"

"Scratch our heads until we find evidence," Weisheng was oddly honest.

"Alright," Xiaoling stood up, "Everyone, close the reports. If we're not going to get anything out of this, don't bother re-reading it. We should rest for the night!"

"But we haven't even started…" Hai murmured.

It was too late. Everyone had closed the reports, even Weisheng. Hai was confused and speechless.

He stood up to stop everyone from leaving. Hai stood between the crowd and the door.

"I thought we were supporting Weisheng and studying the case together?" Hai asked defensively, opening his arms to stop anyone from leaving.

"He literally just told us that it's useless to scratch our heads," Qiang shrugged, pushing Hai aside to leave.

Hai looked at the rest in disbelief until Weisheng stood up to leave.

"It's true," Weisheng nodded, "I just wanted someone to confirm that my slacking is valid." He shamelessly admitted and left the room.

Hai speechlessly left the way for others, finally understanding that when Weisheng said he needed help, he just needed second opinions on the reports. Since Hai confirmed no one needed his help, he returned to his room to look after his fluffy baby.

Xiaoling made her way to the courtyard to see Weisheng sitting by the steps. She knew she'd find him here. She slowly walked up to him.

"What happened to me being your No. 1 on the 'whom to rant to' list?" Xiaoling asked, taking a seat beside him.

"Oh," Weisheng seemed flustered, "It's fine. I don't have much to say anyway." He murmured, "Ah, I haven't told you about the Yang Bo Tax Evasion Case yet," He swiftly changed the topic.

Xiaoling caught him but decided not to pry, "First trial, done?"

"The case is closed," Weisheng said, "He Yanmei admitted to falsely accusing him in a fit of nervousness. The Court fined her. Yang Bo got out unscathed."

"That was quick…" Xiaoling scoffed in amusement, "I thought Yang Bo looked like the nervous type, but it was He Yanmei instead. You can never judge a book by its cover, huh?"

Weisheng narrowed his eyes and nodded. His head was somewhere else.

"What?" Xiaoling decided to pry, "Did I say something wrong?"

Weisheng shook his head, interlocking his hands together, "You can never judge a book by its cover," He murmured her last sentence, "I wonder if we can use this for the Supreme Demon Lord."

"Huh?" Xiaoling complained, "Here, I thought you would talk about your real-life problems, but you decided to bring that pervert up!"

Weisheng sighed, "What will I get from discussing those problems? I don't even want to think about it. I want to ignore all my problems." He admitted, "That's why I'll talk about a bigger problem, the Supreme Demon Lord."

"Strange," Xiaoling rested her chin on her hand, "If you want to divert your attention from this case for the time being, then we can start training tomorrow. I've decided to let you go through Demonic Cultivation."

Weisheng looked at her, "Are you sure?"

Xiaoling nodded, "We have to hide it from the Heavens. I think we can manage that much. I mean, the Heavens haven't found out about the Cursed Eye. How would they find out about a demonic cultivator?" She smiled.

Weisheng narrowed his eyes, "Does that mean the Heavens would take action against me for having this curse?"

"Most likely," Xiaoling shrugged, "You never know what the Heavens will do. But they don't regularly check here, so we'll be fine."

"Why don't they check here?" Weisheng asked.

"Because of my Godmother!" Xiaoling smiled with pride, "Isn't she amazing?" She giggled, then suddenly sighed, "If only she would help you out, it would be easier. I bet she can fix your roots." She pouted.

Weisheng sighed, "I guess I have to earn her trust…"

Xiaoling gasped, "Will you do that?" Her eyes twinkled with hope, "That would fix half of our problems!"

Weisheng smiled at her expression. He quickly retracted his smile and pressed his lips together.

"Then let's start training tomorrow," Weisheng said, "I'm a free man until we find evidence anyway."

Weisheng knew his habit of slacking when problems arose would come biting him. But he had no choice this time. He wanted to run away from his problems.
