Dead End

"What?!" Xiaoling stood up and shouted. Everyone went quiet.

"Yes," Ru nodded, "It's inevitable."

"You mean… Weisheng can never recover?" Xiaoling asked as she sighed, "He can't ascend to immortality if he doesn't have Spiritual Roots to begin with! That makes no sense!"

"Indeed," Ru nodded, "Consequently, I asked the pack of ruffians if they have a suggestion for this."

"And?" Xiaoling leaned forward with anticipation.

"They said…" Ru blinked, "If the mortal in question dies and becomes a spirit-"

"No," Xiaoling frowned, "That's against Heaven's Order. Besides, we are trying to cure the curse just so he doesn't have to die."

Weisheng gulped as he observed them. From hysterics, the atmosphere had gotten to utter seriousness.

"Understood," Ru said, "We can try Demonic Cultivation, then." He gave another strange opinion. Xiaoling opened her mouth to reprimand him, "Let me finish," He insisted.

Xiaoling sighed and nodded.

"Mr. Yuan already possesses a demonic curse. If he tries Demonic Cultivation, it might be easier to break through with such damaged roots. Then, he can switch to immortal arts after breaking through. Then, we can take him to the Duyi Lake to cleanse the roots." Ru suggested.

Silence prevailed over them. Even Xiaoling's Godmother was carefully listening from a distance.

"I'll do it!" Weisheng said, "I'll do anything."

Xiaoling sighed, "Give me some time to think it through. That way of cultivation is no joke." She murmured, "Thanks for your hard work, Ru."

Before anyone could say anything, Weisheng's phone buzzed. He grabbed it to see Liu Heng's missed calls. There was still time before his work hours started, so he wondered what was going on.

"Excuse me," He stood up while calling Liu Heng back. He walked to the window to talk in peace.

Everyone leaned to eavesdrop on him.

"Yes, Mr. Liu?" Weisheng politely asked.

"Yuan Yuan!" Liu Heng screamed through the phone. Everyone could hear him. "Turn the TV on and watch the news!"

Weisheng narrowed his eyes and looked back at the crowd. Hai quickly grabbed the remote and turned the TV on, switching to a news channel.

"We bring you a breaking news update that the successful conglomerate, Yun Shui, has been found murdered in her bathtub. Authorities discovered a gunshot wound to her forehead and the circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation.

It has been revealed that Yun Shui's phone was found at the crime scene. During the examination of the device, authorities reportedly discovered that Yun Shui searched for a contact named 'Weisheng'. This has added a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.

At this early stage, it's crucial to exercise caution and avoid jumping to conclusions-"

Hai turned the volume down and looked at Weisheng.

Weisheng stood there, shocked and lost. Liu Heng spoke on the phone, but Weisheng failed to pay attention.

Xiaoling frowned, "Weisheng! Listen to Mr. Liu…"

Weisheng shook his head, "Y-Yes, Mr. Liu."

"Did you know Yun Shui personally?" Liu Heng asked, "Forget that, come to the office quickly. We have to rule out everything before we're given authority over this case. Be quick!"

With that, Liu Heng ended the call. Weisheng slowly retracted the phone from his ear, holding it down lifelessly.

Xiaoling quickly walked toward him, "Weisheng," She called him, "Think about this later. First, you have to see Liu Heng before you're branded as a murderer falsely."

Weisheng looked at her lifelessly, "You believe in me, right? You know I didn't kill her, right?"

"Of course!" Xiaoling assured him, "You were at my residence the entire time! Plus, if she wanted to call you, she wanted to tell you something!"

Weisheng nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. He couldn't let his emotions take over him before getting to the bottom. He quickly composed himself and headed toward his office. Xiaoling sent Qiang with him for protection.

Weisheng made it to his office in one piece. He went straight to Liu Heng's office.

"Yuan Yuan!" Liu Heng stood up, "You're finally here!" He sighed deeply, "Sit down, you have some explaining to do if you want to be ruled out as a suspect!"

Weisheng gulped and sat down, catching his breath from hurrying to the office. Liu Heng let him compose himself before questioning him.

"You knew Yun Shui personally?" Liu Heng asked, "Are you even the Weisheng in her contacts?"

Weisheng slowly nodded, "I'm the Weisheng she wanted to call…" He admitted, "Yun Shui was my childhood best friend, along with… Gao Bojing and Cang Tao."

"What the hell?" Liu Heng's eyes widened, "Why didn't you tell me?"

Weisheng shook his head, "I don't know… I don't even know how to process this."

"So…" Liu Heng narrowed his eyes, "If you killed them, I'll hide it."

Weisheng looked at Liu Heng dumbfoundedly, "Why would you do that?"

"Because you must have reasons," Liu Heng said, "You became a Prosecutor to find who murdered your father, right?"

Weisheng gulped, "I appreciate that you think so highly of me," He looked down, "But I didn't kill them…"

Liu Heng nodded, "That's all I needed to know," He said, "The case will be handed over to us shortly. If you don't want to deal with this, I'll give you some small fry cases."

Weisheng shook his head, "I will take this one." He insisted, "I need to find out." He stood up, taking heavy breaths, "Mr. Liu, please help me find out who keeps murdering my friends and family… Please…"

Liu Heng walked up to him and patted his shoulder, "You should've asked me for this favor long ago!"

Weisheng looked up at Liu Heng with surprise, "Thank you so much!"

"Now, go eat something before you faint," Liu Heng said, "This case will make us work overtime anyway. Better fill up the stomach before it's too late!"

Weisheng expressed his gratitude to Liu Heng once again. Although the recent circumstances pushed Weisheng to a constant dead end, he was glad to have trustworthy people by his side.
