The first person to arrive was Chance, and the worry I saw in his eyes made my heart beat a little faster than it already was. “Are you alright? That fucking bastard didn’t even stop. Sped off like a coward. I was close enough to get the license plate number, though.” I’d say he looked smug, but the concern in his gaze nullified it. “You scared the crap out of me. Can you stand?”

I nodded and he helped me up, waving people back to give us some room so he could walk us slowly forward. “My bicycle…”

“…is a wreck, sorry,” he said. “You’ll need another one.” I leaned against his side, trying not to groan at the sore muscles in my body and the way I felt…faint. Someone had called an ambulance, I noticed, because that was where I ended up, lying on a bed, passed out.

“Where’s my backpack?” I asked Chance as we left the emergency room sometime later. “I need to check to see if my laptop survived. And I want to find my bike, too.”
