Chapter 9 New Jobs

A few days passed and Chen Fei spent all of his free time either cultivating Boundless or completing the minimum requirements necessary to pass each of his classes. Considering that he hadn't missed a single class for the entire year level, he calculated that he needed only to attend half of his elective classes which were roughly 60-70% of his total course load.

This meant that if he had five classes in one day, and twenty five classes in a normal week he could skip about 10-15 without either failing the minumum class attendence record or falling behind in any of his classes.

Since education was mandatory to all men and women up until the age of sixteen, this meant that Chen Fei didn't have to pay education fees considering that the government of the Water Moon Kingdom, in conjunction with the three Big Ones paid them for all orphans or families that are unable to pay for them.

This might seem free at first glance, however it was a strategic move by the Three Big Ones to get onto the good side of the general populus. Since the majority of the general populus were the ones requesting jobs for Knights to do, some of their revenue came from the general public.

Paying for education fees may seem like a big expense, but in comparison to the amount of money they get from selling Fossils, information, Cultivation Methods and tax from the jobs their Knights complete, all piled up into an immense amount.

And everything that Chen Fei earned, would add to that massive compiled sum.

He tapped his pencil on his desk, looking down at the small book in front of him.

"I still have nine thousand from the job I took from Kim Baek Hyeon. Other than that the funds I've amassed from my other expenditures amount to about $110. If I want to start purchasing drugs that can speed up the spiritual essence refinement process, I'll need much more than this..... And I'm sure as hell not going to get a loan, from a dodgy loan-shark, or even the Holy Fossil Consortium....".

If he had a stable income, either from a business or from owning property Chen Fei might consider taking a loan from the Holy Fossil Consortium. They were more trustworthy than banks, and considering he was a potential Fossil Knight they might even decrease the interest by a few decimals.

Another way of getting money was a sponsorship from an organization or an old money type family with lots of connections. They gave him money and resources to help cultivate and he would in turn go various jobs and requests for them free of charge.

Depending on the organization and they sponsorship details, he might get enough to supply himself with a steady amount of cultivation resources.

He tapped on the table once more.

"Maybe there are some jobs from old money types or someone looking to rise up with the help of a Knight or two. If I accept a few jobs from one particular group, maybe they will start looking at me with potential sponsorship roles in mind.....".

Strength and ability was a main factor when it came to acquiring a sponsorship from an organization or corporation.

When considering individuals for a sponsorship, an organization would often look towards several things when it came to selecting a Knight to represent their company.

Strength was a major factor, as was one's appearance. Having a potent enough strength made the company look more stable, and more stronger when it came to completing their tasks and requests and often a strong Knight would allow said company to become more successful, if they became famous enough.

Appearance mattered as well. As someone with a better physique and someone who was more pleasant to look at was much more favourable in the eyes of the general public. Image was everything to massive corportations.

One's financial situation would affect whether they got a sponsorship or not, as past debts would still be carried over even when a Knight would get sponsored and some often turned towards their company for assistance.

Family situation, one's age, one's gender, and even things like the quality of education affected whether or not someone got sponsored. Some groups representing Universities or Private Schools would rather prefer someone that graduated from their own halls than someone who didn't even take a step through them.

Once again, image was everything.

Chen Fei tapped rhythmically once more.

"Right now I have almost no money to my name, no family background that I care to admit, a strength that hasn't even reached the level of a Copper Fossil Knight and a rather average appearance..... I could ask Dr Kim if his university is looking for a Knight to sponsor, but I don't want to be in that man's debt any further.... Ugh, what should I do?".

Chen Fei slammed his head into his small wooden desk, illiciting a response from the rest of the class. Considering that he was the talk of the town since Skinny P told everyone he was a Human Knight, there was a fair share of rumors and gossip that had sprung up in the past few days.

Most of his acquaintences seemed happy for him, and his small group of friends were also talked too a lot more by more students they didn't normally talk to. Ida and Skinny P even bragged about talking to a couple of beautiful girls from River Lotus Academy, who were asking about Chen Fei.

'I heard that River Lotus Academy has several students that have the potential to become Knights. Considering that its an all-girls school, Skinny P and Ida call it the 'flower garden of water moon'..... I wonder if they managed to get a sponsorship', thought Chen Fei.

The fifteen year old bit the bottom of his lip slightly before glancing around the room, specifically where the teacher was standing. He noticed that his teacher had focused his attention to the other students in the room, not forgetting, but purposely focusing on them rather than Chen Fei.

He shrugged thinking it was for the best. In six months, the only time he ever thought of returning back to school, would be for a job or a request from said school.

Putting his right hand underneath his desk, Chen Fei opened up the Holy Library and immediately opened up the Protection and Detection Services.

"..... Limit search results to "mortal" and "Copper Knight", he muttered as he inputed the designated search results.

Instantly, within the boundaries of Water Moon City, over a dozen or so jobs and requests popped up in front of him. All of them possessing either the word "mortal" or "Copper Knight" within them.

"First Job: Recruitment for a sparring partner possessing a mortal strength or higher on a contractual basis. The contract lasts roughly a year with pay being delivered upon every service given. Flowing Fire Dojo will not teach its battle techniques, however sitting in its lessons will be permitted. Rank 1. Rewards: $500-$1000 per service. Please contact us at.....".

"Second Job: Recruitment for a sparring partner possessing a mortal strength or higher on a contractual basis. The contract lasts roughly a year with pay being delivered upon every service given. Rainbow Lily Sect will not teach its battle techniques, however sitting in its lessons will be permitted. Rank 1. Rewards: $400-$800 per service. Please contact us at.....".

"Third Job:..."

"Fourth Job:...".

"Fifth Job:...".

"Eleventh Job: Recruitment for a security detail. Those who possess a Copper Human Knight strength or higher will be considered. The security detail lasts between 2-3 months depending on the clients schedule, however it may be extended or stopped early depending on monster hordes affecting travel time. Rank 2. Rewards: $5000 per month. Please contact us at.....".

"Twelfth Job...".

"Thirteenth Job.....".

"Fourteenth Job.....".

"Ninteenth Job: Recruitment for a privately sponsored security. Those who possess a strength that exceeds the mortal tier or higher will be considered. The securit detail lasts 2-3 months depending on the clients schedule, however it may be extended or stopped early depending on monster hordes affecting travel time. Rank 2. Rewards: $7500 per month. Please contact us at.....".

The final job request caused Chen Fei to raise an eyebrow. It wasn't the request itself that made in curious, but the wording that they used that confused him.

'Normally a privately sponsored security would want someone with a strength of at least the Bronze Knight level. So why would they consider someone at the mortal tier for this kind of job? It definitely pays well and seems legit, but why would they accept a weaker bodyguard when the payment is the same?..... Maybe I'm just overthinking things'.

The job seemed to be right up Chen Fei's alley, and tonight he would receive his Fossil and head over to Dr Kim's labratory in order to summon and contract his first revived fossil. Once that would happen, he had no doubt his strength would increase greatly within a short period of time.

Having a fossil that could assist him in battle, especially something like a Spinosaurus would make him a formidable foe no matter where he went.

Showing a small smile he wrote down the number written on the Job and made a mental note to call them after he obtained his fossil. The pay was good and the limitations weren't bad.

'Being a bodyguard to some rich second generation might be a pain in the arse for the short term, but the benefits for the long term are huge. If I can form some sort of relationship with them, perhaps I can get something other than money out of this Job'.

Chen Fei's smile grew.

Everything he did was for the two goals he placed for himself in life. He dedicated most of effort into trying to complete his two goals, knowing full well he would revel in the day when they came about.
