A New Game: Part Two

Edge laughed, "Haha, it's just a harmless little Slime. You should have seen your face, haha." He grumbled, "How was I supposed to know what it was, could have been anything." She swooned, "All spawns are controlled, only a very few are random."

The slime was made of green gel and hoped towards him slowly. The gelatinous sphere, now posted in front of him wiggled itself and tackled his leg. There was no pain and he felt very little force behind the attack. Above its head was a number one, signifying its level.

A quick look at his menu and he could tell that his health had gone down 1 point. So although they were on the same level the gap in power was substantial. He picked it up and the slime struggled a little while making a gurgling noise. His finger sunk into its slimy body so he let it go and it fell to the ground making a wet splat sound.

It gurgled once more before shining brightly and then dissipating. He must have defeated it by dropping it onto the ground. Left in its place was a small ball of its gel. Picking it up resulted in it shining brightly and being added to his inventory immediately, so much for finding out what it was.

When he stood up a text bubble appeared in his sight.

Companion Available! Green Slime!

He touched his chin, "So, that's how that works," he thought out loud. He pulled up his Summons List. Sure enough the first entry had been filled up.

Green Slime -1-

The Green Slime is the weakest enemy on the continent. Boasting the lowest stats of nearly any monster it is seen as a perfect beginning monster to hunt as a new adventurer.

Summoned Green Slimes are relatively stronger than their counterparts sporting higher stats and increased health. A summoned slime's major shining light is the skill Rebound Defence.

Skills- Tackle, Distraction, Rebound Defence.

A small green sprite was jumping up and down besides the description. Beneath the description was a button labeled equip. Sitting next to the description a small sprite of the monster was jumping up and down. Underneath the window was an equip button. He pressed it and brought his staff up, "So, how do I summon this thing?" Edge floated in front of him, "Say, 'Summon' then state the monster you wan't to summon." He nodded, "Summon Green Slime." A bright white light shot from the end of the staff and hit the ground. Appearing on the ground right afterwards was a green slime.

He could see it's health bar light up above his wrist, making it a bit more manageable. It had 15 health, staying true to its description. It rolled around the ground and then jumped up to meet him. He patted it's head and it made a satisfied gurgling noise. He then noticed a small marker above it's head, it must be there to help distinguish it from enemies.

Edge floated by, "Slimes are the least powerful creature of this world, but it makes one loyal companion. Kind of like a jello puppy?" Some rusling came from a nearby bush and another slime appeared. The two slimes stared eachother down and a foreboding hung in the air between them. He stepped back and the slimes slowly inched towards eachother.

This slime had a number two above it's head, so it must have a little more health than the first one. His slime wiggled and then tackled the other. It pushed it back a little and it made a gurgle before retaliating with it's own attack. Strangely it was knocked back from it's own attack and it fell back a few inches. It seemed to have taken damage from it's own attack, that must have been the Rebound Defence skill activating.

They went back and forth a few times like this, and he reflexively checked his buddies health every now and then. He was losing one hit point for each tackle, so either it's defence was strong or the other slime's attack was weak. Eventually his slime had defeated his opponent and he let out a half hearted cheer. The slime had lost about five health from that incursion.

It hopped over to him and let out a gurgle. He leaned down and patted it, "Good job, you showed him." The slime vibrated, as if it was purring. Alex had noticed that the number above it's head had actually gone up by one. He looked at his companion's window and realized it's stats had risen, this little slime had leveled up.

But now he was left with a problem, his companion had enough health to last maybe two more battles and it looked like it wasn't being regenerated. Edge must have read his mind, "Do you see that item the slime dropped upon death, pick it up and look at it in your inventory." He picked up another small sphere of goop and it disappeared. Looking at his inventory he found out what it was.

"Gel of a Green Slime. Healing Item. Heals players for ten health and companions by five."

He took it from his inventory and looked at his companion. He smeared the gel on it's green surface and it began purring again. Sure enough it's health was raised by five, bringing it to about 15 of 18. He nodded, "Good to go." It hopped around happily and took up a place between his feet.

"Alright let's explore a bit shall we?" The sanctum was pretty big, with trees here and there hiding animals in its branches. He also met with other slimes on the way. He would always leave one for his companion but he could easily take down the others with his staff. His weapon took out each slime in about two hits.

Eventually he leveled up himself. And he took a look at his stats as his slime took care of another slime. It had reached level three, so it was in no danger. He noticed he had five unspent SP, or spending points. He could make out what the skills affected so he had a pretty good idea on how to spend them.

Vitality didn't seem important, as long as he had a strong summons to take the heat off himself he thought he would be fine. His base health also rose a certain number without having to put skills into it anyway. Strength probably meant his ability to wield weapons. He was a mage type player in all his other games, so he deducted that wouldn't be too useful in the future either.

He suspected raising the magic skill would help him learn more high tier magic, or whatever comes after white. Intelligence boosted his mana and strengthened his magic power. Dexterity had something to do with being a sneaky, bow wielding, rogue and heightening his sneaking abilities. He wouldn't bother with this one either, there was probably magic that could substitute such skills.

Summon Power was a little trickier, as far as he saw he couldn't actually raise this ability. It had already gone up a point automatically like his health and mana.  What it did was a little different story, he couldn't guess as it was a specific mechanic to this game. "Edge, what is Summon Power." The light was currently watching the slime finish it's opponent.

"Summon power raises with one's level. Although it boosts your Companions abilities and stats it's by a small margin. It's real purpose is to heighten your summon ability. Simply put, the higher your power the stronger the monsters you can summon." He nodded his head, "So, it raises with power. That's a pretty good balance, keeping players from summoning super powerful monsters early on is a good idea."

She swirled around, "There are ways around the summoning lock, a good example of this would probably be that stone you picked up earlier." He raised an eyebrow and slid over to his inventory, "Capture stone? What does this do." She flew around to him, "If by chance you stumble upon a powerful monster a little above your power margin you can use this stone to capture it instead of summoning it normally.  In this state it does not level up or gain experience until you reach it's required level. These are rare items so use them sparingly."

He nodded, "That is brilliant." He couldn't help but think of the possibilities this held, though he should probably wait till later. All that was around here were slimes. He spent two points on magic and intelligence. He then put the remaining one into strength, he liked wearing cool armour and strength would probably come in handy for that.

Continuing on he found he was now taking the slimes out in one hit rather than two and even his slime friend was making short work of his prey. The pond broke into a stream leading through a cave with cracks of sunlight littering it's natural ceiling. He had no choice but to follow, and he was getting tired of the slimes.

His slime was rather slow, it's spd stat being the lowest of them all. He picked it up in his arms and carried it instead. It vibrated against his chest as they walked and it put a smile on his face. Inside this new section of the cave he met a different monster, a blue slime. It was like the green slime but it seemed a slight bit lager and had a higher level than those before.

There was only one, so he laid down his companion to use his staff. His first bolt didn't do much but roll it around. He looked at his staff thinking it was broken, then edge blurted in. "Ah, your first elemental monster. This is a blue slime, it has the element of Water. This also means that skill of yours, Fireshot, will have little effect on him." It rolled up and tried tackling him, before it could land it's attack his green slime blocked it.

His companions health dropped by three points, but it knocked it's enemy away by using it's Rebound defence. He looked down, his companion had about 24 health at his current level, now 21. Alex looked at him, "Thanks for the assist, do you think you can take him?" The slime made a gurgle and hoped towards the blue slime proudly protecting it's master.
