My last day

For the past few days, my boss has been glaring at me. Maybe it's because of my failure to resolve the problem at the Tokyo branch. Not my fault that his nephew is so dumb to borrow money from gangsters and used the company money to clear his debts. Well, I've to admit that I did not try my best to resolve the issue but what can I say, that boss of mine shouldn't have try to seduce my girlfriend, that gambling addict nephew of his can just climb back up to the branch leader position.

Oh well! Now that he's calling me to his office, I guess he'll shout at me for some nonsensical reason. While seated I notice him signaling me to his office with a grin plastered on his face. Following greetings, I sat in the chair admiring the office that could've been mine, was I not such a procrastinator. He was pouring me some whiskey when the office door was again pushed open and entered my girlfriend. A good woman this one I tell you intelligent, kind, sensible, humble, and beautiful. She was wearing a somewhat downcast expression while coming in, which only got worse when she saw me. My boss told her to seat before bringing two glasses of spirit which he placed in front of us.

He got seated before asking whether we knew why he called us both. We looked at each other, but neither of us showed any signs of having some knowledge of why he called us. Noticing our attitude he said: congratulations both of you as you've both been promoted. Since Thomas retired, a partner position is finally available for the best department chief and it's been decided that Cynthia you'll be the one to be promoted as for you Marvin following your successful streak this year in straightening out the Toronto and Amsterdam offices, you are going to take charge of the Milan office as the head of the branch. I hope that you'll both get accustomed to your new positions as fast as possible since a merger might be possible with Suncko Corporation in the following months.

Shocked then elated from the announcement Cynthia stood up and thanked our boss while I was still flabbergasted by what he said. I understood that: I who closed most of the deals in the last 03 years was considered subpar to Cynthia who if I was honest was close to third place in the rankings I've made of the company's managers. I knew that a partner position would soon be available which was the reason why I did my best these last years to be the most eligible person for the position; though luck might not have been with me when I was put in charge by my boss to solve his nephew issue. While I am certainly not glad to have lost the promotion, Cynthia might get the job done as well as I could.

I stood up, congratulated Cynthia then thanked my boss before departing from his office. Going back to my office I saw a piercing white light and that was it. I could not see, hear, feel anything anymore. I was just there.

I don't know where I was but I could only perceive emptiness around me, I thought that I would lose myself if I did not do something to calm my churning mind since I was completely disoriented. I had a talent that only my parents knew, I could recall past events accurately when I tried; so I put that talent to use and began recalling what happened last before I saw that light. While remembering I noticed through a glass reflection something suddenly appearing in the sky then nothing. I concluded that whatever that thing was, it was responsible for my current condition. Waiting for something to happen, I noticed my thoughts slowing down as if I was dozing off but the strangest thing was that it seemed like I was compulse to sleep. I knew that something worse might happen if I did, so my only solution was to resist that compulsion. I did the only reasonable thing I could think of, that was to count. The compulsion never ceased but I could fight it off. A long time passed, I know since I have now reached 9 million, I was surprise to be able to count such a huge number. That was when I could suddenly see myself seated in front of a man. He was wearing a blue navy suit and was writing something on a green sheet of paper. He looked at me and I could see the image of a galaxy in his eyes.

_Well Marvin, what am I to do with you? For starter, my name is Clint an Otherverse Agent. And you are dead.

_What do you mean I am dead? and where are we?

_Unfortunately you lost your chance of an afterlife by seeing the apparition of a higher class being through its reflection, and we are in the void as you have been unlucky enough to also miss the reincarnation wheels. You might ask what is an higher class being but it's not for you to know. I don't have a lot of time to spent with a nutcase job like yours so just stay calm. Since you missed your chance to reincarnate naturally, you will have to test your luck with the void dices.

He pulled some grey pair of dices and asked me to throw them. Apparently I didn't have a choice and threw the damn dices. They stopped rolling and a hooked cross sign appeared on one of the dices surface while on the other one there was the image of a tree.

_ Well, well, well! We might have something here he said. You'll be going to a peaceful world. Since you spent an awful amount of time in the blank space, throw the dices again for your blessings.

I trew the dices again and they project an holographic screen in front of me showing me a person cloaked in a dark cloth with a book in his hand.

_It's determined you are getting a darkness affinity and a boost to your mental capacities. Good bye!

I haven't even had the chance to ask for anything when I found myself in a dark space. That whatever agent was such a prick, if he is responsible for that otherverse or some shit, he at least should not be like those hard-ass secretaries.

I didn't know whether I was in my mother womb or lost in another void so I resigned myself to mine's fate.
