Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Tobias swallows; but eventually, he gives a slow nod.

"Yeah; that's true. I guess it's not like there's just one set path I have to follow, and if I pick anything else then my life is ruined. I think I was so set on the idea that I had to wait until I knew exactly where I was going before I even started, or nothing would work out. But I don't think anybody really knows all that, right? It's impossible to know what will happen, like, a few years down the line. Maybe I'll find something else I really want to do then, or another thing will happen that will change everything; I can't make plans based on a future I don't even know about. So all I can do is just try to go with what feels right for now, and…just do my best, I guess."

He gives you a half smile; and it really seems as if he's feeling a lot more hopeful now.

You talk for a few more minutes, and around you the coffee shop gets more and more empty. Finally, you get up yourselves and walk out onto the sunlit street, where Tobias gives you a wave and hurries back over to the flower store to meet his parents.
