Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Rana gives a sympathetic nod.

"I don't know if I know anyone who really does. Maybe it just takes a while; or, I don't know, maybe there isn't just one answer. To be honest, I feel like I haven't had much chance to figure out what kind of stuff I want to do outside of school or protesting. Obviously I care about those things, but they're not my whole life. And I do know I'm lucky; but I guess when I've always been told I could have so much potential, or whatever, it's hard to stop and think, just…what do I actually want?"

There's another burst of applause as the first song finishes, and soon the guitarist begins another, livelier one. By now you've finished your drinks, and the three of you spend a while just watching the performance, soaking in the music and the smell of coffee in this little room away from the full brightness of the sun.
