Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

At once, Arctus gives a drawn-out, wailing meow—runs out into the middle of the yard—and disappears into the grass.

Mouth hanging open, you stare in horror at the spot where Arctus has just vanished. After a moment's silence, you call her name—but you know she won't be able to hear you. In fact, you somehow have a feeling that she's already a few miles too far away to hear you. As much as she might look like one, she isn't an ordinary cat; and even without understanding the full depth of her magical abilities, you know that if she can disappear at will, then there's a chance that she could already have appeared back in the forest.

For a moment you stand frozen in panic—but at long last you spring back to life as all thoughts of anything else leave your head. Barely stopping for breath, you rush into the house and grab everything you might possibly need before running out the front door and down the street.

Somehow, you know there's only one place she could possibly be. The only question is—how are you going to get there?
