Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Taking the flashlight, you do a quick sweep of the maze, ducking under tree branches and pushing through hedges in order to find as many clues as possible about who might have been here. Based on the few pieces of trash on the ground, including a couple of soda cans and candy wrappers, it looks as if there were a few people here—or else one person was waiting here for a while. The flashlight puts you in mind of kids telling scary stories (though you do have to wonder about Ennis), but why they would have left it behind is a mystery.

When you leave the maze, you see everyone else starting to flock back towards Rana, near where the stage is currently being taken apart. When you reach her and put down your trash bag (and leave the flashlight to be recycled if nobody claims it), she makes a mark on her clipboard and smiles.

"Awesome work, Huknock!" she says, ticking off a few more names as people return from all over the park. "Looks like we made a big difference! Thanks for your help, everyone. I've got water—and candy—for anyone who wants it."

She hands out drinks and snacks, which the crew gladly takes before you all pick up your bags again and head for the gates. Behind you, you notice Tobias falling in step with Zoe, who talks to him quietly as you walk. At the same time, you find yourself walking just beside Rana, who gives you a bright smile when she spots you.

"Thanks so much for volunteering," she says. "I was a little worried we wouldn't have enough people. So—what did you think of the fair?"
