Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Even after less than a day, you're starting to get the feeling that you might not be the perfect fit for this town, or even its residents. Maybe it's a little too soon to judge, but it's hard to imagine not feeling like an outsider here. But that's okay, as long as you're happy doing your own thing.

Thinking about everything you saw of Dina and the rest of the Town Council last night, you decide that you feel:

You feel pretty apprehensive about Dina. You're not totally sure why, but you just don't know if you can trust her. Maybe that will change; but all you know for now is that you'd rather rely on yourself than anyone else.

As for your new neighbors, you feel like you've already made a pretty good first impression on Maxie and Zoe. That's after you've barely even gotten used to the idea of having neighbors. Of course, you're not really sure what your relationship with them could be like, but you're sure that if you wanted to, you could definitely get to know them better.

And then there's Tobias. Your…friend?

You're not quite sure. You know you used to be friends—but after spending so long away, what does that make you now?

Thinking back to the few minutes you spent sitting on the wall together last night, you realize you don't know anything about this Tobias. Whoever he used to be when you would run around your grandma's yard together is as distant now as the person you were back then. You didn't even remember who he was until yesterday; can you really say he's your friend if he's been more or less a total stranger for eleven years?

With all this going through your head, you force yourself to take a deep breath and remind yourself that a single day in town is nothing compared to all the time you have ahead of you. Anything can happen; and it's up to you to decide for yourself what you want to happen in that time.

Still, out of everything that's happened since you came to Silvertree, the thing that's hanging most on your mind is:
