Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Rana laughs and gives you both another wave as you both set off.

"You know who her aunt is, right?" he asks as you walk. "It's Dina Voche—y'know, the head of the Town Council. I don't really know her or anything, but she came to speak at our school a couple of times. She kind of reminded me of Rana, but…a little more serious, I guess."

Tobias hesitates for a moment, licking his lips.

"Me and Rana were…kind of friends at school, I guess. She was really nice to me, but I don't know. She always seemed to be friends with everybody, so I wasn't really sure. Not that my parents didn't try sometimes; they're pretty desperate for a good influence on me. But she does all this stuff, and she was always really popular and smart, and…I sort of never knew if she was just being nice when she asked me to hang out, so I never really said yes. I just feel really awkward around her now, in case she thinks I don't like her or something. I kind of just…didn't want to get in her way. "
