Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Nodding quickly, Tobias adds:

"Yeah, it was good. I didn't really know what to expect, but I guess that's what those visits are for."

He smiles and gives you a look that tells you he's grateful to you for helping to keep things simple. Walking through these narrow corridors is intimidating enough without having an existential crisis.

Rana manages a smile in return—but to your surprise, she looks a little unsettled by Tobias's answer.

"That's great," Rana replies. "I was just—I don't know if it's just me, but I was kind of…freaked out when I toured my college."

Tobias's head whips around, his eyes wide.

"Wait, really?"

"Yeah," Rana replies. "Like—they're just going to let me do this? Like I'm a real adult or something?"

Tobias looks shocked—but at the same time, you see his eyes begin to brighten up. You can tell what he's thinking: he's not the only one.

As you all round a corner, however, a large door comes into view at the end of the hallway. On it, you can just about make out the words: "Office of Town Council Leader."

All of a sudden, Rana hesitates—and quickly forces out another laugh.

"But I mean—I am excited. It's kind of scary before you get there, but I still couldn't imagine not going, you know? I'm kind of nervous, but…I think probably everyone is."

Tobias doesn't say anything, but you see the corners of his mouth falling. After a moment, he drops his eyes to the floor and gives a short "hmm" of agreement. Rana seems a little too preoccupied to notice.
