Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

"Your parents seemed nice," you say into the quiet.

"Yeah?" Tobias snorts, shrugging his shoulders. "We don't really talk, I guess. Or like, only about little stuff. Mom talks about flowers a lot, and Ma tells me about every single dog they ever meet. I feel like if we talk about anything else we just end up fighting."

He kicks his heels into the crumbling wall, then pulls out some gum and starts chewing loudly. For a while, he seems lost in thought.

"You went to live with your grandma, right?" he asks, turning suddenly to look at you. Wordlessly, he offers you some gum.

"Oh—thanks," you say, taking a stick. "Yeah. I went with her when she moved out of town."

Tobias nods.

"Do you fight with her a lot?" he asks tentatively.

Almost at once, you shake your head.

"Not really. Maybe sometimes, when I…uh, messed up in school." Or accidentally started a fire in your tree house, you think with a twinge of regret. "But otherwise we get on pretty well."
