Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

With a wave, Gus steps away from the microphone as a little applause sees him off. As the usual noise starts to pick up again, you turn towards Maxie's dog pen and see that Tobias is finally making his way over towards you. You decide to wait for him just where you are, watching the stalls come back to life and the band take their place on the stage again.

It's as you're looking towards the stage that you spot Gus again a little ways back, this time standing next to Dina and shaking hands with someone else you can't quite see—that is, until the little group of people blocking your view moves out of the way, and at once you recognize the unmistakable smile of Mr. Clarence.

"Oh my god, those dogs know a lot of tricks," comes a sudden voice right by your ear. You almost jump when you hear it, being so distracted. When you see Tobias standing next to you wearing a look of confusion, you figure you forgot just how fast he can move when he's in a rush. "What's the matter?" he asks when he catches sight of your face.
