Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Marlowe grins.

"Exactly! The people need to know about weird stuff too."

After checking they have enough pictures, Marlowe starts folding up the tripod, making sure to keep hold of it a little more tightly than before.

"I'd better run and catch up with Minnie," they say, gazing towards the fair to see if they can spot her. "I'm running a survey to find out all the kids' favorite thing to do at the fair, so I have to try and talk to as many people as possible. If you check the news tomorrow, keep an eye out—you don't wanna miss those results!"

Giving you a quick wave, Marlowe hoists the tripod over their shoulder and takes off towards the fair at a run, leaving you alone in the quiet glade. Glancing at the trees standing around you, you find yourself momentarily distracted by the thought of disappearing trees. Could such a thing really happen? Could something—or someone—be taking trees from the forest?

After a few more moments, you follow after them, and eventually find yourself back amongst the heaving crowds.
