Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Maxie and Zoe are just starting to laugh when, from out of the crowd, Tobias appears at Zoe's side and taps her on the shoulder.

"Hey Mom, is it okay if I just—"

He does a double take when he sees you, and for a split second he breaks into a smile—but very quickly he rearranges his face into a look of mild confusion. Before you can ask him what's up, Zoe puts a hand on Tobias's shoulder and gestures towards you.

"Hey, kiddo—"

"Don't call me that, Mom."

"Remember we told you we ran into Huknock last night? Would you have recognized him?"

Tobias frowns at you intently for a few moments, as if seeing you for the first time. You realize from the way he raises his eyebrows ever so slightly that he hasn't told his parents about coming over to see you last night.

"Uh—wow, yeah. Probably not." He laughs, pushing back his hair as Maxie and Zoe watch the both of you expectantly. From the looks on their faces, it seems like they're expecting your "reunion" to be quite a momentous occasion.

As the moment of silence stretches on, Maxie gives Tobias a hopeful prompting.

"I know it's been a while, but you two used to be such great friends. Remember how you used to ask us 'Is Huknock gonna visit—'"

"Yep, I remember, Ma," Tobias interrupts quickly, his jaw tense. He throws you a meaningful glance. "It's…cool to see you again!"
