Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

By now the small number of people around you is starting to dwindle, and Robin, remembering that he has to get home to make dinner for him and Vada, takes a deep breath and saves his work before shakily turning off the computer.

"You know what? I'm not going to freak out. Considering I'm not a real historian and I don't know what I'm doing, I've made an okay start. Maybe I'll just have to jazz it up a little, find a more interesting way to write it all out. And I guess I can keep looking for inspiration, but…maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up."

He pauses, before starting to pack his things away.

"Anyway—thanks for coming to help," he says. "I should probably take the evening off, but…we'll see, I guess. What about you? Are you doing anything fun? You know, if there's anything more fun than watching me fall apart in the town archives."

You realize as he asks that you have the option of seeing Nic or Tobias tonight. But today's already been pretty tiring—if you're not in the mood to see anyone, you could always just stay home.

What do you decide?
