Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

He manages a faint smile, seeming a little more relaxed now that he's seen Marlowe is all right. Marlowe, on the other hand, is still taken aback by this revelation.

"Wow—I had no idea you'd met each other already," they say, giving each of you a questioning glance. "How did that happen? Were you—wait, outside the park? What did you think he was going to do?"

Ennis scratches his chin and sighs.

"Well—you know, I'm not saying I was in the right," he tells Marlowe, "but I was just heading to bed that night, and I thought I saw something in the park. I'm always nervous of what people might get up to after sneaking into someplace they're not supposed to be after dark, and I just wanted to check it out. I happened to run into Huknock outside the gates, and I may have reacted a little…defensively," he finishes, a tinge of guilt in his voice.
