Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

You're not sure if Tobias hears you, because a second later, he's already disappearing through the doors. He gives you a speedy wave.

"Anyway—see you around, yeah?"

As you set off again, pretty uncertain how to react, you realize you remember Zoe saying something about a party last night. It was only a passing mention—and in fact, now that you think about it, she didn't tell you that it was going to be an anniversary party. Maybe it was supposed to be a secret; you can't quite think why else she wouldn't have included that piece of information.

But when Tobias asked you to come, there did seem to be a kind of pleading in his face. You don't think he would have told you about it if he didn't want you to come; and even after the strangeness of your meeting last night, you do think it sounded like he'd like you to be there.
