Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

Now that some time has passed since the vote, it has only begun to sink in more and more that these developments are here to stay. And although it's mainly the town that you've begun to see changes in, the thought of how the forest might be affected is often on your mind. And so far, the idea hasn't gotten much easier to come to terms with.

Nodding slowly, your grandma replies:

"I can see you care an awful lot about this, Huknock. I'll admit that I don't feel much of a personal connection to this town, but after living here for so long I can still empathize with you. For all my time in Silvertree, I never paid much attention to the big changes that would come and go. I suppose I never felt as if they would have any impact on me. But of course that really wasn't true; especially in the case of these developments. All I can really say, Huknock, is that there may yet be better things to come. Things won't always be the way they are. And I'll be here, if you ever need a shoulder."
