Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

You frown a little to yourself as you think—and you find yourself wishing that your grandma was here, so you could ask her if she really expects you to stay here forever. You know she said she had some things to take care of, but what? Where is she? Why has she left you here on your own with no choice but to stay put for however long it takes her to come back? How is it fair that Tobias might get to travel and move away while you're stuck following whatever vague instructions you're given?

You find yourself tilting back and forth slightly on the swing, as if needing to let off some steam. Tobias cocks his head to the side, watching you as if trying to work out what's on your mind—but then, after a couple of moments, he asks:

"Want me to push you?"

He stands up and circles behind you so he can put his hands on your back. He gives you a gentle push, sending your toes skidding over the wood chips—but then his next push is a little stronger, and then with the next one you start to feel the cool wind whipping past your face as you kick your legs into the air, and pretty soon you're flying as Tobias's laughter fills your ears.
