Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

"All right, put everything down there. We should be able to spread it out if we need the space."

"Do we really have to do this on the ground?"

"Well, there aren't a lot of places around here to do secret art."

"Yeah, but there are probably less dirty spots."

You're kneeling on the concrete in the empty side street, and Tobias is unrolling two long sheets of paper in front of you. After a few attempts, you manage to claw your way into the plastic packaging around the brushes, and right away Tobias grabs a thick brush and a couple of the finer ones for good measure. Already squeezing out a little bit of paint, he says:

"Okay, to save time, we can both do one of the banners. I'm a little better at drawing flowers than dogs—but it's not really fair if I pick what you're painting after basically forcing you to help me. What do you want—dogs or flowers?"
