In one instant, I think Luciano is moments away from killing Dominik, and there is nothing I can do. Dominik is protecting me—he is still shielding me from shadows even though this is my own brother. And because I can't see Luciano's shadows, I realize I'm powerless to stop him. 

Not that I want to hurt Luci with his shadows—of course I don't. But the feeling of having that one power stripped away when Dominik could be taken from me at any second is the most helpless I have ever felt. 

I just found this man, God. Please don't take him from me. Please.

In the next instant, a new voice has arrived—this one with a Mexican accent—and Dominik pulls me behind him, no longer concerned about my brother and his gun.

Luciano grabs my hand and tries pulling me back toward the door, but I shove him off of me. The heated glare he gives me would make me cower in any other circumstance, but this isn't the time.
