Chapter 4 :All eyes on Lin Yi
As time passed, the platoon commanders of the Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company gathered beside the middle-aged man, their eyes fixed on three figures on the runway: a veteran in civilian clothes and leather shoes, and two recruits carrying marching backpacks.
Lao Pao never imagined that in Zhuang Yan's youth, he had completed a daily cross-country run through the entire city, covering distances far exceeding his own military training. But Zhuang Yan was unaware that Lin Yi, an orphan from Hunan Province, had to traverse mountains just to eat, developing endurance and speed that surpassed his own.
"Xiaozhuang, Lin Yi, keep going!" Chen Xiwa cheered from the ground, clenching her fists in excitement.
When Zhuang Yan and Lin Yi overtook the veterans, the recruits in the audience erupted in cheers. "Well done!"
The recruit company commander blew his whistle, attempting to stop the scene, but Lin Yi looked at Zhuang Yan and said coolly, "Let's continue." He picked up his pace, unleashing his full speed and darting through the mountains and forests like a nimble cheetah.
Seeing this, Zhuang Yan refused to admit defeat. He gritted his teeth and followed, both figures relentlessly galloping around the track.
Zheng Sanpao stood in place, sweating. The recruit company commander approached to end it but was stopped by him. He recognized Lin Yi's plan: Zhuang Yan was a thorn, but also promising. His distinct personality and pride were exactly what the army needed. Only by challenging Zhuang Yan's pride and tempering his personality could he become a true soldier.
Lin Yi maintained a sprinting pace of 10 seconds per 100 meters without faltering, his body cutting through the wind. Zhuang Yan followed stubbornly, wanting to catch up, but his body wouldn't allow it. His throat burned as he gradually fell behind – 500 meters, 800 meters, 1000 meters.
By the time he was 3,000 meters behind, Zhuang Yan had fallen, scraping his knee and staining the track with blood. Lin Yi, having completed another lap, looked down at him and said, "I know you're a student from the Drama Academy's directing department, full of pride and ambition to be a great director."
"You..." Zhuang Yan began, feeling humiliated by Lin Yi's words in a way no one else could achieve.
"I also know you look down on him," Lin Yi continued, pointing at the veteran in the distance. "You think he's just a common soldier, nothing remarkable. But he and these veterans who've served for years are all training to protect their families and defend our country. The world is never short of wars, and the peace you enjoy is bought with their lives, protecting our motherland."
"I don't care why you joined the army, but since you're here, accept that fact. Learn to respect the military and the most admirable among our people."
These words struck Zhuang Yan's heart like a hammer. Looking at Zheng Sanpao and the other veterans, he suddenly felt deeply ashamed.
Meanwhile, all the recruits gazed at Lin Yi, remembering his godlike sprint, and cheered louder: "Lin Yi! Lin Yi! Lin Yi!" The shouts echoed throughout the playground and spread across the Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company.
On the hillside, Miao Yi, the company commander, asked, "How long has he been running?"
"Report, sir: eight kilometers at a steady jog, then five kilometers sprinting at 10 seconds per 100 meters," Chen Guotao, the platoon leader, reported meticulously.
The surrounding people were shocked. The current world record for the 100-meter sprint is 9.58 seconds, set by Jamaica's famous sprinter Usain Bolt at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. To run 5,000 meters at a pace of 10 seconds per 100 meters was unheard of – even Bolt couldn't manage such a feat.
"I want information on these two soldiers," Miao Lian said, his eyes gleaming as he looked at Lin Yi and Zhuang Yan.
"Yes, sir," Chen Guotao replied, equally impressed.
On the playground, Lin Yi had already returned to his unit and saluted Zheng Sanpao. "Squad leader!"
Zheng Sanpao nodded, his eyes filled with complex emotions – a clear recognition of Lin Yi's abilities.
This interaction was not lost on the other recruits. Seeing someone like Lin Yi show such respect to a veteran set a powerful example for the entire company.
As the defeated Zhuang Yan dragged his exhausted body back to the first class, the others regarded him with complicated expressions.
