Ava slammed the hood shut with a clang, the smell of grease clinging to her. Sweat beaded on her forehead despite the cool morning air. Unlike the usual symphony of engine purrs, the silence in the garage was deafening. The radio on the counter crackled to life, a news report detailing the rising tide of the 'undead' cutting through the static. Ava gritted her teeth. It wasn't a news report anymore, it was a damn horror story unfolding in real-time.

The diner door swung open with a bang, startling Ava. Liam, the former soldier turned bartender, stumbled in, his face pale. "They're here," he rasped, his eyes scanning the empty diner.

Ava grabbed a wrench from the toolbox, a familiar weight grounding her racing heart. Across the counter, Maya, the ever-calm doctor, finished packing a medical kit. "Ready?" she asked, her voice steady despite the worry etched on her brow.

Sarah, the young artist with a shock of vibrant purple hair, stood frozen, clutching her sketchbook. Ben, the gruff ex-teacher, peeked out the window, his jaw clenched. A groan echoed from the street, followed by the unmistakable shamble of the undead. Disgust and fear churned in Ava's stomach.

"We need to move," Maya said, her voice firm. "Now."

Ava bolted out the back door, Liam at her heels. The stench of rotting flesh hit them like a physical blow. The streets were a scene from a nightmare, littered with the moans of the infected. Ava spotted Noah, the tech whiz, sprinting towards an old barn on the outskirts of town, his backpack bouncing with every step.

Ronin, the stoic loner, emerged from the barn shadows, crossbow slung over his shoulder. He gave a curt nod and disappeared back inside. A beat-up truck rumbled to a stop next to them.

"Get in!" a gruff voice boomed. Diego, the weathered farmer, gestured towards the bed of the truck. "Heard rumors of a safe zone up north. We ain't staying here to become zombie chow."

Ava hesitated, glancing at Sarah clinging to her arm. She saw the terror in the young artist's eyes, a reflection of her own fear. But despair wouldn't save them. With a steely resolve, Ava climbed in next to Maya, Sarah squeezing in beside her.

The men piled into the back, the truck groaning under the weight. As Diego slammed the gas, the roar of the engine mixed with the moans of the approaching horde. Ava gripped the door handle, her eyes blurring with tears.
