“Just get Nolan,” Dylan said, “if you can find him. He’s the key to all this.”
James scoffed as he grabbed Chris’s arm and led him across the road. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?”
“I’m sorry—”
“Damn it, Chris.” James shook his head.
Chris glanced at Dylan and Ron and caught them staring.
James said, “Why do you always choose their side?”
“I’m not. I’m trying to catch a killer.”
“And if you hadcome alone today, I’d have lost you.”
“I wouldn’t have come alone,” Chris said, then caught his breath.
“I’m trying to keep you safe,” James said, “and you do this. Is my concern for nothing?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect—”
“What if Nolan had taken you,” James said. “Or just shot you right here?”
Chris bowed his head.
“What if I couldn’t find you?”
Chris sighed. “All I can say is, I’m sorry.”
James held Chris’s gaze for a few breaths, then said, “You have no idea how much I worry about you.”
