Shadow Slave: Reverend Insanity

I love Reverend Insanity and Shadow Slave novel. So, I mashed them up. Read as Fang Yuan tries to achieve the impossible again. Watch him struggle, struggle to stay alive, struggle to break the laws, defy death and achieve eternal life where the very gods of the shadow slave reality had failed. This is an alternate universe. I am no Gu Ren Zen. I can't really do Fang Yuan justice, I understood that while writing. So, read it without thinking about it too much.

Into The Maw

The creature's presence was suffocating, its growl vibrating through the very stone beneath his feet. It moved in the shadows, circling him, invisible but terrifyingly close. The sword in his hand felt small, insignificant, against whatever was stalking him in this vast, underground chamber. His body was sore from the fall, his muscles aching with every movement, but his mind remained sharp, cold, and focused.

His eyes, though useless in this impenetrable darkness, tracked the creature's movements through sound, feeling the subtle shifts in the air as it prowled around him. Every instinct told him to run, but there was nowhere to go. The walls of the chamber stretched on into the void, and without light, there was no way to find an escape. He was cornered, just as the beast had wanted.

The ground trembled slightly as the creature's massive paws struck the stone, its steps growing louder, more deliberate. It was toying with him, savoring the hunt. It could have attacked by now, but it didn't. It was testing him, waiting for him to make a move, to show weakness. But he wouldn't give it the satisfaction. He was the weakest creature in this labyrinth, yes, but he was also the most cunning. He had survived a very long time only by outthinking his enemies, by being patient when others would panic.

His grip tightened on the sword as he calculated his next move. The creature was large—he could hear the weight of its body shifting as it prowled—but that also meant it was slower. If he could time his strike perfectly, if he could hit the right spot, he might be able to wound it enough to escape. But he had to wait for the right moment.

The growl deepened, and then, with a sudden burst of speed, the creature charged. Its massive body slammed into him, sending him crashing to the ground. Pain exploded through his side as he hit the stone floor hard, his sword clattering out of his grip. He rolled instinctively, narrowly avoiding the creature's claws as they gouged deep furrows into the ground where he had been moments before.

Scrambling to his feet, he snatched up the sword just as the creature lunged again. This time, he was ready. He sidestepped, his body moving with the fluid precision of someone who had trained for this all his life, and slashed at the creature's side. The blade cut through flesh, but only barely. The creature's hide was thick, too tough for a simple strike to do any real damage.

It roared in anger, and for the first time, he caught a glimpse of its form as it moved through the faint, eerie glow of bioluminescent fungi that clung to the distant walls of the cavern. The creature was enormous, far larger than anything he had faced before. Its body was covered in thick, black fur, its muscles rippling beneath the surface like a coiled spring ready to strike. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural light, reflecting the faint luminescence of the cavern as it locked its gaze on him.

There was no fear in its eyes, only hunger.

It charged again, faster this time, but he was ready. His body moved before his mind could catch up, his instincts guiding him. He ducked low, sliding under the creature's massive body as it passed over him, and slashed upward with his sword. The blade found a weak spot beneath its ribs, sinking in deep. The creature howled in pain, its roar deafening in the confined space of the cavern. But even wounded, it wasn't finished.

It whipped around with terrifying speed, its claws slashing through the air. He barely managed to throw himself out of the way, the creature's claws grazing his shoulder as he rolled to safety. The pain was sharp, hot, but he pushed it aside, his mind still focused on the fight. He couldn't afford to let his guard down, not for a second. This was no ordinary creature. It was something else, something far more dangerous than the beasts he had faced so far.

He stood, blood dripping from the deep wound on his shoulder, and faced the creature once more. It was breathing heavily now, its side bleeding from where he had struck it, but it wasn't slowing down. If anything, it seemed more determined, more feral.

The creature lunged again, but this time, instead of dodging, he stood his ground. At the last possible moment, he dropped to one knee and thrust his sword upward with all his strength. The blade pierced the creature's chest, sinking deep into its flesh. The creature roared, thrashing wildly as it tried to dislodge the sword, but he held on, driving the blade deeper until he felt it hit bone.

The creature's movements slowed, its massive body shuddering as it let out one final, pained growl. And then, with a heavy thud, it collapsed to the ground, its body twitching once before going still.

[You have slain an Awakened Monster, Dark Imp.]

[Your soul grows stronger.]

He stood over the carcass, chest heaving, blood dripping from his wounds. The fight had taken a lot out of him, and his body was screaming for rest, but he couldn't stop. Not yet. The labyrinth was unforgiving, and the scent of blood would draw more predators soon enough. He needed to move.

He yanked the sword from the creature's chest, wiping the blood off on its fur, and took a moment to catch his breath. The creature had been massive, far larger than anything he had faced before, and its fur was thick, providing the perfect material for warmth. He quickly set to work stripping the hide from the body, fashioning a crude cloak to protect himself from the cold. He also took out the soul shards and absorbed them.

With the fur wrapped around him, he felt the immediate relief of warmth spreading through his body. It wasn't perfect, but it would help him survive. The raw meat would keep his strength up, though he knew it wouldn't last long. He needed to find something more sustainable—water, food, shelter. But for now, the creature's flesh would do.

He stood, his body aching, and surveyed the cavern. The faint glow of the bioluminescent fungi provided just enough light to see by, casting eerie shadows across the walls. The True Darkness, it was gone or at least it wasn't present here.

The cavern was massive, with multiple tunnels leading off in different directions. Each one seemed to stretch on into infinity, winding deeper into the earth. He had no idea which way to go, but standing still wasn't an option.

As he moved toward one of the tunnels, the whispers returned, faint at first, but growing louder with each step. They echoed through the stone, filling the air with their eerie, unintelligible tones. He couldn't understand the words, but he could feel a premiation—warning, urging him to turn back, to stop.

But he couldn't. There was no going back.

The tunnel ahead beckoned, dark and foreboding, its walls slick with moisture. The air was colder here, heavier, filled with the scent of damp earth and decay. He tightened his grip on the sword and stepped forward, deeper into the darkness.

The whispers grew louder, more insistent, as though the labyrinth itself was alive, watching, waiting.

And then, from the darkness, came a sound that chilled him to the bone.

It wasn't a growl or a snarl, but a voice. A single, cold, hollow voice that echoed through the tunnel.

"Come closer…"

He froze, his body tensing. The voice wasn't human. It couldn't be. No one else could be here. No human but him.

But the voice called again, louder this time.

"Come closer… Traveler!"

He gripped the sword tighter, Ultra instinct screaming at him to turn back. But something was drawing him forward, pulling him deeper into the tunnel. His mind was calm, cold, but the unease gnawed at the edges of his thoughts. He was injured and bloodied.

There was something waiting for him in the darkness.

And he must see it through.
