“I wanna tell you something,” Rye said, his voice stronger. “I know it hurts. But regardless of how it ended, I think you should know that you’re a better man because of that kid. I mean, because of Kieran. Yeah, sure, he’s gone, and it fucking sucks, Liam, but he did something to you. He changed you. Gave you a depth that wasn’t there before, and I believe you should hang on to that.” Rye searched Liam’s eyes. “I mean, that’s something, right? It has to count for something.”
Will agreed. “Before Kieran, you’d have this stunned look on your face sometimes, as though you weren’t quite awake. You know? But you’re different now. Sharper.”
“Bottom line, Liam,” Rye said, “we’re not gonna let you sink back to that place you used to live in. That underwater world or something where you used to sit and wait for something to happen.”
