King of Cannon Fodders

Standing about 10 meters away from the small and harmless-looking blue slime, Calle was squinting his eyes and tried to look at the cat-sized slime from a few different angles.

Noticing what Calle was currently doing, Edric raised his head up and also observed the creature that it had never seen before while still comfortably sitting on top of Calle's shoulders.

'No matter how and from where I look at it, it still looks like just any ordinary slime…'

The slime was certainly not a foreign creature for Calle's eyes as countless RPG games be it the traditional video games or the virtual reality games, almost all of them had slimes as one of the monsters available in the game.

And slimes being so popular and widespread in those games, of course, it also had a very well-known reputation amongst the players who have met them before. And that was being the king of cannon fodders.

There were several famous cannon fodders on those RPG games that players would be able to kill even when they had just logged into the game. Some games chose goblins, others had the players fight common animals that exist on earth like rabbits, while most of them decided to just throw in cute and adorable-looking slimes for the players to stab their swords or throw their basic level 1 fireball onto them.

While the goblins could swing their arms and use a weapon, the rabbit could either run away or bite the enemies, the slimes were usually not given justice and were just given the ability to bounce around while head-butting the players.

They were basically programmed for the players to kill them as they were even throwing themselves straight at the players. The players didn't have to chase them around nor do they have to be careful of their agility. Just a simple swing towards the stupidly programmed slime, then they would gain the exp or the item they need to complete their first quest.

Calle didn't know whether the slime in the dungeon that would make him the strongest existence in the universe would also have a stupidly programmed slime that was literally free exp for him to grab.

However, Calle didn't underestimate the harmless and innocent-looking slime and prepared himself for the fight against the king of the cannon fodders.

Edric was able to feel what Calle was about to do, and he quickly flew up from Calle's shoulders and also prepared himself to attack the slime whenever Calle told him to do it.

The slime didn't seem to notice the baby dragon and human pair slowly moving closer towards it even though Edric's wings should have made a sound loud enough for any creature to notice him coming from a dozen meters away.

Calle also noticed this and tried shouting in the direction of the slime, but the slime didn't seem to give single care to Calle's loud shout that should be loud enough to rival a crowing rooster in the morning sunrise.

'Yup, I guess it's safe to think that this slime didn't have any ears.'

Calle also tried waving at the slime, but since the slime didn't have any facial features, Calle didn't even know which side of the slime is considered to be its front. So he just moved randomly left and right while still keeping his distance, hoping to get some kind of reaction from the slime. But even after he gave his middle finger and still did not get any kind of reaction, he finally concluded,

'And no eyes either,'

'How does this creature even live? Can it even fight back if I tried to kill it?'

'Wait, how do I even kill this thing?'

Looking back at the slime, Calle didn't see anything that could have been the slime's weakness. There was no health bar on top of the slime's body like in the RPG games nor was there something that looked like a slime core that he had to destroy to kill the slime.

As Calle was still busy thinking about how he should approach the slime and try to figure out how to kill it, Calle didn't realize that he had already walked far enough that he was only about 3 meters away from the slime.

And as if the slime had suddenly noticed a change in its surroundings, its dormant body started moving as it abruptly bounced itself straight towards Calle's direction.

The sudden movement of the dormant slime caught both Calle and Edric off-guard as the human was still thinking of a way to fight the slime while the baby dragon was busy looking at his human.

The distance between him and the slime was 3 meters away which was about 3 or 4 steps away depending on how long a person's feet were. However, the slime only needed a single bounce to cross the 3-meter distance and crashed its body straight against Calle's.

Calle might have been startled by the slime's bouncing prowess as he didn't expect the king of the cannon fodders would have the strength to jump 3 meters in only a single bounce, but that doesn't mean that he was completely caught off-guard by it.

Although he wasn't able to jump sideways since the slime was already right in front of him, that doesn't mean that he couldn't raise his hand and put up a guard against the slime's headbutt. Or in a slime's case where its whole body looked like a head, it was more appropriate to call it a body charge instead of a headbutt.

The moment Calle's hands made contact with the charging slime, Calle felt a slight push against his hands, but it wasn't strong enough to push him away or even to break his posture.

The enhanced strength trait that Edric shared with Calle played its part as it helped Calle withstand the slime's charge as if it was just a weak nudge on his hand.

However, even though Calle had completely stood against the momentum of the slime's charge without breaking a single sweat, he suddenly jerked his hand forward to push the slime away as he yelled,

"OUCH!!!"

Calle then turned his hand and looked at the spot where his hand had just made contact with the slime only to see that his white skin had a reddish hue right on the spot where the slime crashed against him. It wasn't red due to the force of impact since the pain that made him yelp in pain wasn't due to a numb feeling on his hand, rather it was a stinging pain as if his bare skin had just been dipped straight into acid.
