Saving Pompeii?

"Because Gorgon had already been slain by this time, there's no way she would have been alive when you saw her. So all of the mythical creatures appearing here aren't alive... They are merely versions of the real deal from myths and legends."

"If they were all real, we wouldn't have won against them that easily... " I argued.

"I guess that's true... But if that's the case, the Gorgon at Teuton isn't as powerful as we might think. Phew..."

"Hey, hey! I didn't say anything about that... For all we know, the monster of the Shapeless Isle might be powerful enough to destroy the Five Domains if you piss her off enough," I warned, glaring at Vincent.

"The most I can say for now is that the Gorgon has been dormant for the past few months and hasn't made a move yet. And with the help of some displaced Mages, they mentioned that Gorgon's Elemental Energy and Aura levels had stagnated ever since Gorgon appeared."

"Perhaps she isn't ready to fight yet and just wanted to scare us..." reasoned Vincent.

"There's a difference between dormant and patient. If you lower your guard against a monster powerful enough to turn you into stone... Then you will become one of her many statues on her island. And you've got yourself to blame for this whole mess..."

"Invading others without warning or courtesy... I'm surprised she hasn't destroyed you yet!"

Yes, I'm still salty. Listen, I had two break-ins in my lifetime, one of which I died from... So I'm allowed to be angry at invaders.

"I know it sounds bad to you, but we had planned to make that island for a new village to make up for the evacuated one," explained Vincent as I tapped my foot in annoyance.

"Why did you have to evacuate the village?"

"A volcano that we thought was dead decided to blow its top after not doing so for the longest time. Unfortunately, that village is located outside of the Five Domains."

"So you went and saved a foreign village? Why? That area isn't a part of the Five Domains, so why did you think to help them? Or are they some offshore supplier for the Mafia, and VK asked you to help them?"

I know it sounds selfish but hear me out... What's the point of wasting resources and personnel on a small village that isn't even under your jurisdiction? What happens if things don't go as planned? The savior becomes the blamed. Your goodwill is useless.

Humans are sick creatures; they would push the blame onto others before realizing the error of their ways. And butting into a business where you don't belong can only spell more trouble for both parties.

"It was my own decision, and VK approved it. I didn't know that one of the unoccupied islands around the area would have been housing the Gorgon..."

"I'm still at a loss... Why would you randomly help that village? Were they worth something to you? Like, did you spawn into the world in that village? I have to know because this is just bizarre for me..."

Now it was Vincent's turn to get fed up as he slammed his foot into the ground, causing a massive crack to appear on the floor. I wasn't fazed by it, but I mentally prepared for Vincent to grab my neck or something like that. But the man never did anything and just sighed while facing me.

"You know about Pompeii, right? I heard from your parents that your aunt brought you to an exhibition that showcased the remains of the aftermath of Mount Vesuvius erupting. The village, nay, the city I was trying to save, is Pompeii."

"I'm not sure if doing this would alter the course of history, but it's a risk I'm willing to take. It's either that or let the entire country suffocate in Ash again."

"Didn't you say Vesuvius had already erupted? So Pompeii should've been gone by now!"

"Nope, but I did take Geography, so I know when that thing would blow. Besides, check the dates, and you'll see we are dangerously close to that event. I've already evacuated the families on the outskirts of the country to the Five Domains."

"All that's left would be the main village, and I need to find an island for them to stay in. Do you think you can help me with that as well?"

I shook my head. If there's one thing I hate, it would be in a vast crowd. And I'm not good at moving or convincing people. I let my actions do the talking most of the time, so communicating with people isn't my forte. Plus, if I'm being honest, I don't care for such things.

I'm a combatant, not a savior.
